Summary

Picture a landscaping company owner in Austin who hears that ChatGPT and Google's AI answers often quote Reddit threads and YouTube videos. Her business has a website and a Google Business Profile but no presence on either. She wonders whether that matters.

We counted how often news about AI search names the big community and reference platforms in its URLs: Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, Quora and Stack Overflow. Out of 21,976 AI search articles since 2023, these platforms went from 0.4% of coverage in 2023 to 3.3% in 2026.

The reasons changed along the way. In 2025 Reddit dominated, mostly because of a lawsuit over scraping by an AI search company. In 2026 YouTube and Wikipedia lead, with stories about AI answers citing YouTube videos and about Wikipedia's AI partnerships.

What we measured

AI search articles are those whose URL slug names Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or SGE, ChatGPT search or SearchGPT, Perplexity, or AI search in general. Within those, we counted articles whose slug names each platform. We also checked GDELT's organization tags, but YouTube is often tagged from embedded video players and share buttons, so we used URL slugs only.

This measures how often the news connects these platforms to AI search. It does not measure how often AI tools cite them.

YouTube slugs in 2026 include stories about AI Overviews citing YouTube videos and YouTube's own AI search. Wikipedia's 48 articles mostly cover its AI partnerships. Quora's brief appearance came in 2025, around a study ranking it among the top-cited sources in Google's AI Mode.

What this means

The press increasingly links AI search with the platforms where people discuss and explain things: Reddit threads, YouTube videos and Wikipedia pages. AI tools draw on these sources when they answer questions about products and local services, so a business that is discussed there has more material for AI answers to work with. An AI SEO consultant will often look at those threads and videos before looking at your website.

You do not need to be everywhere. Find out which platforms AI tools cite for questions in your industry, then make sure your business is described accurately where it counts. Our free AI visibility audit shows which sources AI answers rely on for your category, so a GEO agency or your own team knows where to spend time.

Limits

Counts are small for most platforms and years, so shares move with a few articles.

We matched URL slugs only. Articles that mention these platforms only in the text are not counted.

News mentions are not the same as AI citations. This study says nothing about how often AI tools cite each platform.

Non-English articles with non-Latin URLs are undercounted.
