AI visibility: what it is, how to measure it and how to improve it
AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand when people ask questions in your market. It is measured by running a fixed set of buyer prompts across those engines and tracking mentions, citations and which competitors appear. You improve it by letting AI crawlers in, making your content easy to quote, cleaning up your entity data and earning mentions on the sites AI engines trust.

What AI visibility means
Search visibility used to mean one thing: where your pages ranked on Google. AI visibility asks a different question. When someone asks an AI assistant "who is the best [your service] for [their situation]", does your brand come up?
There are three levels:
| Level | What it looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mentioned | The answer names your brand | Buyers hear about you even if they never click |
| Cited | The answer links to your page as a source | Brand exposure plus a chance of a visit |
| Recommended | The answer suggests you as a top option | The closest thing to a number one ranking |
The absence of all three is the real risk. If a buyer asks ChatGPT for options and gets three competitors, you were never in the running, and no analytics tool will tell you it happened.
Why AI visibility matters now
More questions get answered before anyone reaches a website. Google said in May 2025 that AI Overviews were available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages. It also said AI Overviews drive an increase of over 10% in usage for queries that show them in big markets like the US and India.
At the same time, fewer people click. A Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025 found people clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% without one. They clicked a link in the summary itself on 1% of visits.
Put together: the answer is increasingly the destination. If you are not in it, you lose visibility you used to get from ranking alone. For more figures with sources, see our AI search statistics page.
How to measure AI visibility
There is no official AI visibility number from OpenAI, Google or Perplexity. Every score you see is built from prompt testing, so it helps to understand the method.
1. Build a prompt set. Write 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask. Mix:
- Category prompts: "best [service] for small businesses"
- Local prompts: "[service] near [city]"
- Comparison prompts: "[you] vs [competitor]"
- Problem prompts: "how do I fix [problem you solve]"
- Brand prompts: "is [your brand] any good"
2. Pick your engines. At minimum ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
3. Run the prompts on a schedule. Monthly is fine for most businesses. AI answers vary from one run to the next, so judge trends over several runs, not a single result.
4. Record the same fields every time:
- Mentioned (yes/no)
- Cited with a link (yes/no, and which URL)
- Position in the answer (first, middle, last)
- Sentiment (positive, neutral, negative)
- Competitors named
5. Calculate a share. Mentions divided by prompts, per engine, is a simple and honest AI visibility score. Compare it to your top competitors' share on the same prompts.
You can do this in a spreadsheet. If you want software, our comparison of AI visibility tools covers the main options and what they cost.
What drives AI visibility
Crawler access. Each AI engine uses its own bot. OpenAI's documentation says OAI-SearchBot controls whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search answers, separate from GPTBot, which is used for training. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is what surfaces sites in its results. Google's AI features use Googlebot and the normal search index. If any of these are blocked, you are invisible on that engine.
Indexing and snippet eligibility. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no extra requirements beyond that.
Quotable content. Engines lift passages. Pages that answer questions directly, with specific facts and named sources, are easier to use. The 2023 GEO research paper found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raised a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
Entity clarity. The model needs to know who you are. Consistent business name, description, location and category across your site, schema, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles all feed that picture.
Third-party mentions. AI answers often lean on reviews, comparison articles, forums and industry lists. If your competitors appear in "best of" lists and you do not, the model has less reason to name you.
Freshness. Old prices, discontinued products or outdated facts make your pages less useful to cite.
How to improve AI visibility, step by step
- Run a baseline. Check where you stand today with the free AI visibility checker, then run your prompt set once to get a starting share.
- Fix crawler access. Allow Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt. Check that your CDN or firewall is not challenging them.
- Add and fix schema. Organization schema on the homepage; Product, Service, Article and FAQPage where they match the visible content.
- Publish an llms.txt file. It is a proposed standard for giving AI agents a curated map of your site. Google says it does not need one, so this is a cheap extra, not a ranking lever. Our llms.txt generator makes one for free.
- Rewrite your key pages answer-first. The question as a heading, the answer in the first two to four sentences, details after.
- Fill content gaps. If your prompt checks show competitors winning on comparison or "best for" questions, publish honest pages that answer those questions.
- Get listed where AI looks. Review sites, industry directories and comparison articles in your niche.
- Track monthly and repeat the cycle on the prompts where you are still missing.

AI visibility engine by engine
Each engine finds and shows sources differently, so your visibility can be strong on one and missing on another.
| Engine | How it finds pages | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's search index, with query fan-out across related searches | Indexed in Search Console, snippets allowed, answer-first content |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler plus search results | OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot, which Perplexity says surfaces and links sites in its results | PerplexityBot allowed, clear pages with specific facts |
| Gemini app | Google's systems | Same basics as Google Search, plus a consistent entity across the web |
A common pattern: a business shows up well in Google AI Overviews because its SEO is solid, then turns out to be missing from ChatGPT because a security setting blocks OAI-SearchBot. That is why you check every engine, not just the one you already watch.
Google's documentation also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so even within Google the cited links can differ for the same question.
What a useful AI visibility report includes
Whether you build it yourself or buy it, a report is only useful if it leads to fixes. Look for:
- The exact prompts tested, so you can rerun them and see the same thing.
- Results per engine, not one blended score that hides where you are missing.
- Competitors named in each answer, so you know who is taking your spot.
- Cited URLs, yours and theirs, so you can see which pages the engines trust.
- Trend over time, at least three runs, because single answers vary.
- A short fix list tied to the gaps: blocked bots, missing schema, a comparison page you do not have, a directory you are not in.
A report without the last item is a dashboard. It tells you the score but not what to change.
One more test of a good report: can you explain each fix to your team in a sentence? "OAI-SearchBot is blocked by our firewall" or "we have no page comparing us to our two biggest competitors" is a fix list. "Your AI visibility score is 34" is not.
Common reasons a brand has low AI visibility
- AI bots blocked by default. Some CDNs and security plugins block AI crawlers unless you opt in. Sites often find out only when they check.
- Training and search bots blocked together. Blocking GPTBot to opt out of training is a reasonable choice. Blocking OAI-SearchBot as well removes you from ChatGPT search.
- JavaScript-only content. If the text appears only after scripts run, some crawlers see a blank page.
- Vague copy. Pages full of "quality service" and "tailored solutions" give a model nothing to quote.
- Inconsistent business data. Different names or descriptions across the web blur who you are.
- No third-party footprint. If nobody else writes about you, AI engines have little to go on.
Tracking AI visibility yourself vs getting it done for you
Tracking alone does not raise visibility. Most monitoring tools show you the gap; someone still has to fix it.
Our AI search optimization services combine both for a flat $299 a month. Month one fixes what the free audit finds: AI crawler access, schema, llms.txt, entity data and content gaps. After that we keep optimizing and monitor up to 50 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, so you can see your share move. If you want a done-for-you AI SEO agency rather than another dashboard, start with the free audit.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention, cite or recommend your brand in their answers. It is usually measured by running a set of buyer questions across those engines and recording the results. Higher AI visibility means more buyers hear your name during research.
How do I check my brand's AI visibility?
Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask and run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Record whether you are mentioned, whether you are linked, and which competitors appear. Repeat monthly, because AI answers change between runs.
Is there an official AI visibility score?
No. OpenAI, Google and Perplexity do not publish a visibility score for brands. Every score comes from prompt testing, so it is only as good as the prompts and engines behind it. A simple, honest version is mentions divided by prompts, per engine.
Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?
Common causes are a blocked OAI-SearchBot crawler, thin or vague content, inconsistent business information across the web, and few third-party mentions. OpenAI's documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Fix crawler access first, then content and reputation.
Does SEO improve AI visibility?
Yes, in large part. Google's AI features use its search index, and other engines rely on crawling and search too, so indexed, relevant, well-linked pages are the starting point. AI visibility adds a focus on quotable answers, entity data and mentions on other sites.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Crawler fixes can show up within days; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search bot take about 24 hours to register. Content changes need recrawling, and third-party mentions take months to build. Expect to judge progress over a quarter, not a week.
