Summary

Picture a family-owned bakery in Columbus that has seen fewer calls from new customers this year. The owner reads plenty about AI search, but every story seems to be about publishers, tech giants and lawsuits. None of it tells her what it means for a shop like hers.

We checked how often news about AI search mentions small or local businesses. Of 22,017 AI search articles in GDELT between January 2022 and September 2026, only 63 had small business, SMB, SME or local business terms in the URL.

That is 0.3%. The share is rising, reaching 0.6% in 2026, but the gap is wide. Most coverage tells the story from the side of the platforms and big publishers, while the businesses most exposed to lost calls and visits barely appear.

What we measured

AI search articles are those whose URL slug names Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or SGE, ChatGPT search or SearchGPT, Perplexity, or AI search in general. Within those, we counted articles whose slug also contains small business, small businesses, SMB, SME, local business, small firms, mom-and-pop or similar terms. We excluded slugs that only say entrepreneurs, since those were mostly about startup founders.

For comparison, we ran the same small business match on 3.2 million AI-related articles in the same period. Tone is GDELT's average tone score, with below -2 treated as clearly negative and above +2 as clearly positive.

25 of the 63 articles also mention local businesses, local search, near me or Google Maps. Two Australian small business titles, SmartCompany and Dynamic Business, published 7 between them. 17 of the 63 came from press release or syndication sites, mostly agencies and software firms pitching AI visibility services to small firms.

What this means

Small and local businesses are among the most exposed to AI answers, because so many of their customers start with a question like best plumber near me. Yet almost none of the AI search news is written for them. Most of it covers enterprise brands and publishers, and few pieces explain what an AI search optimization agency would even do for a plumber or a dentist. Do not wait for the coverage to catch up before you check where you stand.

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your customers ask, and see whether you are named and whether your details are right. Our free AI visibility audit does that for you, and our answer engine optimization services are priced for small businesses that want the fixes handled.

Limits

We matched URL slugs. Articles that discuss small businesses only in the text are missed, so true coverage is higher than 0.3%, though likely still small.

Counts are small (63 articles), so year-to-year shares move with a few articles.

Press release sites are included because they are part of what readers see, but they are not independent reporting.

Non-English articles may use other words for small business that our terms do not catch.
