Answer engine optimization (AEO): how to become the answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so search engines and AI assistants can pull it out and present it as the direct answer to a question. It started with featured snippets and voice assistants and now covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. In practice AEO means answering each question in the first few sentences, using question-shaped headings, adding FAQ content and keeping your facts specific and consistent.

What answer engine optimization is
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of pages. Google's featured snippets were the first big one. Voice assistants followed. Today the main answer engines are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
AEO is the work of making your page the source those systems use. It focuses on the answer itself: how clearly you state it, where on the page it sits, and whether the system can trust it.
That makes AEO narrower than SEO. SEO is about the whole page ranking for a query. AEO is about one passage on that page being good enough to lift out and show on its own.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
The three terms overlap and get used loosely, so here is how we use them.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be cited or mentioned in AI-generated answers |
| Typical surfaces | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice, AI Overviews, chat answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| Unit of work | The page | The answer passage | The page plus your brand's presence across the web |
| Key tactics | Relevance, links, technical health | Answer-first copy, question headings, FAQs, schema | AEO tactics plus sources, statistics, entity data, third-party mentions |
AEO and GEO are close cousins. AEO came first and is rooted in snippets and voice. GEO is the newer term, named in a 2023 research paper, and puts more weight on how large language models pick and blend sources. For a full side-by-side, read AEO vs GEO or AEO vs SEO.
How answer engines pick an answer
Every engine works a little differently, but the broad flow is the same:
- Retrieve. The engine searches an index for pages related to the question. Google uses its own search index. OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler controls which sites appear in ChatGPT search. Perplexity runs PerplexityBot.
- Read. The engine pulls passages from the retrieved pages.
- Compose. It writes or selects an answer and links some of the sources.
Google adds a step it calls query fan-out. According to its documentation, AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics while building one response. A page that answers a narrow follow-up question well can earn a citation even if it does not rank first for the main query.
Two things follow. First, if you are not crawlable and indexed by an engine, you cannot be its answer. Second, among the pages it does retrieve, the one with the clearest, most quotable passage has the edge.
Answer engine optimization strategy: the core tactics
Answer first. Put a direct answer in the first two to four sentences under every question heading. Do not warm up. If the question is "how much does X cost", the first sentence should contain a price or a range.
Use question-shaped headings. Write H2s and H3s the way people ask: "How long does AEO take?" rather than "Timeline". This matches the query and tells the engine exactly what the next passage answers.
Keep answers self-contained. An answer should make sense if it is lifted out alone. Avoid "as mentioned above" and pronouns that point to earlier sections.
Add a FAQ section. Five to eight common follow-up questions with short, complete answers. This covers the fan-out questions engines run in the background.
Use lists and tables. Steps as numbered lists, comparisons as tables. Both are easy to extract.
Add specific, sourced facts. The 2023 GEO research paper found that adding statistics, quotations and citations to a page raised its visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Name your source in the copy and link to it.
Mark up what is on the page. Schema such as Organization, Article, Product and FAQPage helps engines read the page. Google's guidance is that structured data should match the visible content, and that you do not need special markup to appear in its AI features.
Make sure bots can get in. Check robots.txt and firewall rules for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. A blocked bot means no chance of being the answer on that engine.
Keep facts consistent. Your prices, hours, locations and product names should match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and review sites. Engines notice conflicts and may cite someone else.
A before-and-after example
Here is a typical service page section, rewritten for AEO.
Before
Our Approach. At Acme Plumbing we have been serving the community for many years with a commitment to quality. When it comes to water heaters, there are many factors to consider...
After
How much does water heater replacement cost? Most standard tank water heater replacements we do fall in a set price range that depends on tank size, fuel type and access. Tankless units cost more. Call for a fixed quote; we do not charge for the visit.
The second version answers the question in the heading, in the first sentence, in words a customer would use. An engine can lift it without editing. (In a real page you would put your actual price range in that first sentence. We have not, because we do not invent numbers.)
AEO for different kinds of pages
The same principle, answer first, plays out differently depending on the page.
Service pages. Buyers ask what you do, who it is for, what it costs and how long it takes. Give each of those its own question heading with a direct answer. If you cannot publish exact prices, publish what drives the price and how to get a quote.
Product pages. Engines answer "is X good for Y" and "X vs Y" questions. Spell out who the product suits, who it does not, key specs in a table and how it compares to the obvious alternatives. Keep Product schema and Merchant Center data current; Google's guidance for its AI experiences calls this out.
Local business pages. Many questions include a place: "best dentist in Austin open Saturday". Your hours, service area, address and specialties need to be on the page as text and match your Google Business Profile exactly.
Blog posts and guides. These win the "how" and "why" questions. Lead with the answer, then the steps. Add a FAQ at the end for follow-ups.
Comparison pages. "X vs Y" and "alternatives to X" are some of the most common prompts in AI assistants. An honest comparison table, including where the other option is better, is more likely to be quoted than a one-sided sales page.
About page. Engines use it to work out who you are. State plainly what the company does, where, since when and for whom.
If you only have time for a few pages, start with the ones that answer buying questions: your main service or product pages and one honest comparison page. Those are the prompts closest to a sale.
Technical checklist for AEO
- Robots.txt allows Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Your CDN or security tool is not blocking those bots with a challenge page.
- Key content is in the HTML, not only rendered by JavaScript after load.
- Pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- No accidental nosnippet or max-snippet limits on pages you want quoted. Google's documentation says these controls limit what appears in AI features too.
- Organization schema on the homepage, with name, logo, URL and social profiles.
- FAQPage or Article schema where it matches the visible content.
- An llms.txt file at the root. It is optional and Google says it does not need one, but some AI tools read it. Our llms.txt generator creates one for free.
The free AI visibility checker tests most of these in one pass.
How to measure AEO
Rank trackers tell you where a page ranks. They do not tell you whether you are the answer. For that you need to check the answers themselves.
- Pick 20 to 50 questions your customers ask before buying.
- Check them monthly in Google (for AI Overviews and featured snippets), ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
- Log whether you are the answer, cited with a link, mentioned by name, or absent, plus which competitors appear.
- Look at the trend over several months. AI answers change between runs, so one check is noise.
Google Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in the Web search type of its Performance report, but does not split it out. If you want software to run the checks, see our list of AEO tools.
Should you hire an AEO agency?
You can do AEO yourself. The tactics are not secret. What takes time is rewriting dozens of pages, fixing technical blocks and tracking prompts every month without letting it slide.
If you would rather hand that off, we are an AEO agency with one flat plan: $299 a month. Month one fixes everything the free audit finds, from AI crawler access to schema, llms.txt, entity data and content gaps. Then we keep optimizing and monitor up to 50 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Start with the free audit, then decide whether our AI search optimization services are worth it for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can present it as the direct answer to a question. It applies to featured snippets, voice assistants, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The core tactic is answering each question clearly in the first few sentences of a section.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank a whole page in search results. AEO aims to make one passage on that page good enough to be shown as the answer on its own. AEO depends on SEO, because engines can only use pages they can crawl and index.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on being the direct answer and grew out of featured snippets and voice search. GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on being cited in AI-generated answers and also covers brand mentions and entity data across the web. Most of the tactics overlap.
Does FAQ schema help with answer engine optimization?
FAQ content helps because it answers the follow-up questions engines look for. FAQPage schema can help engines read that content, as long as it matches what is visible on the page. Google says no special markup is required to appear in its AI features, so schema supports good content rather than replacing it.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Technical fixes such as unblocking AI crawlers can register within days. Rewritten content needs to be recrawled, which can take weeks, and brand mentions on other sites build over months. Track the same prompt set monthly to see whether you are winning more answers.
Which answer engines matter most?
For most businesses, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode come first because of Google's reach, followed by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The right mix depends on where your buyers ask questions. Monitoring a fixed prompt list across all four shows where you are strong and where you are missing.
