Summary
Picture a plumbing company owner in Kansas City who asks his marketing person why the phone is quieter even though the website still ranks. She says some customers now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for a plumber near them, and the answer names two or three companies. He has never seen a news story about that.
There were very few until recently. We searched the GDELT news database for AI search articles whose headline names a local business type, such as law firms, contractors, plumbers, hotels, restaurants or dentists, or local search terms like near me and Google Maps. Only 6 appeared in all of 2024.
In the first nine months of 2026 there were 157. The topic is growing fast from a tiny base, and the businesses most covered are law firms and home service trades. A large share of the 2026 coverage is press releases from agencies, which suggests the market is selling to local businesses before the press is reporting on them.
What we measured
AI search articles are those whose URL slug names Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or SGE, ChatGPT search or SearchGPT, Perplexity, or AI search in general. Within those, we looked for local business terms in the headline part of the URL, using whole words so that, for example, accidentally does not count as dental. Each article is assigned to one category.
We flagged articles from press release wires and the syndication sites that republish them. Hotel coverage includes stories about booking hotels through AI search tools, since hotels are among the first local businesses those tools sell to.

Law firms and home service trades are both high-value local categories where one new client is worth a lot, which may be why they attract marketing agencies first. Restaurant coverage peaked in 2025 (19 articles), including stories about booking restaurants through AI search tools. Dental and medical practices, a big local category, appear in only 13 articles, 11 of them from press release sites.

In 2025 most of the coverage came from news and trade outlets. In 2026 almost half came from press release wires and the local news networks that republish them, typically agencies announcing AI search services for lawyers, contractors or dentists. The top outlets overall were ITNewsOnline (10), four syndication sites with 7 each, and Lawfuel, The Manila Times and PR Newswire with 6 each.
What this means
Local businesses are now being pitched AI search services, but there is still little independent reporting on what actually works for them. That gap means owners have to check their own AI brand visibility rather than rely on the coverage. The good news is that the check is simple: ask the AI tools the questions your customers ask, in the places you serve.
See whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features name your business for a search like best plumber near me or family lawyer in your city, and whether the details are right. Our free AI visibility audit runs those checks for you, which is worth doing before you take a call about answer engine optimization services from anyone, us included.
Limits
Counts are small, so the growth rate rests on a low starting point of 6 articles in 2024.
We matched words in the headline part of URLs only, so articles about local businesses that do not name the business type in the URL are missed.
Press release sites are counted because they are part of what readers see, but they are not independent reporting.
Non-English local business terms are only partly covered.
