Free llms.txt generator

Use the generator below to create an llms.txt file: a short markdown file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a summary of your site and a list of its most useful pages. The format was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 and is documented at llmstxt.org. It takes a few minutes to make and costs nothing, but be realistic: Google says it is not needed for AI Overviews, and support across other AI platforms is limited.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain markdown file you publish at /llms.txt. It is meant for large language models and AI agents, not for people or search engine crawlers. Instead of making an AI tool crawl and parse your whole site, it gets a short, clean overview with links to the pages that matter.

It is different from robots.txt. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may and may not fetch. llms.txt does not grant or block anything; it is a reading guide.

The llms.txt format

According to the specification at llmstxt.org, the file uses this structure, in this order:

  1. An H1 with your site or project name. This is the only required part.
  2. A blockquote with a short summary of the site.
  3. Optional paragraphs or lists with more detail. No headings here.
  4. H2 sections with lists of links. Each item is a markdown link in [name](url) form, optionally followed by a colon and a short note.
  5. An "Optional" H2 section by convention, for secondary links an AI tool can skip when it needs a shorter context.

A minimal example:

# Acme Plumbing

> Acme Plumbing is a licensed plumbing company serving Leeds and Bradford, offering emergency repairs, boiler installation and bathroom fitting.

We are open 24 hours for emergency call-outs. Prices are listed on each service page.

## Services

- [Emergency plumbing](https://example.com/emergency): 24/7 call-outs and typical response times
- [Boiler installation](https://example.com/boilers): brands, prices and warranty

## Company

- [About us](https://example.com/about): history, licences and service area
- [Contact](https://example.com/contact): phone, email and opening hours

## Optional

- [Blog](https://example.com/blog)

The spec also suggests offering clean markdown versions of important pages at the same URL with .md added, so AI tools can read them without the HTML around them.

How much AI platforms actually use llms.txt

This is the honest part. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard that the major AI search engines have committed to.

  • Google says in its documentation on AI features that you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google staff have also said publicly that its systems do not use llms.txt.
  • Other AI companies have not, as far as we could find, published documentation saying their search or answer products read llms.txt when deciding what to cite.
  • Where it can help: developer documentation sites and AI coding tools, where an agent fetching a clean list of docs pages saves time. Some documentation platforms generate llms.txt automatically for this reason.

So treat llms.txt as a cheap, low-risk extra. It will not fix a site that blocks AI crawlers, hides content behind JavaScript, or lacks clear answers. Those matter far more, and our free AI visibility checker tests them.

How to install llms.txt

  1. Generate the file with the tool above. Keep the summary factual and the link list short: your main service or product pages, pricing, about and contact.
  2. Save it as llms.txt in plain text with UTF-8 encoding.
  3. Upload it to your site root so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, use your host's file manager, SFTP or an SEO plugin that supports it. On Next.js and most static setups, put it in the public folder. Hosted platforms that do not allow root files may need an app or a redirect.
  4. Check it loads in a browser and returns plain text, not your 404 page.
  5. Update it when you add or remove important pages.

You do not need to link to llms.txt from your pages or submit it anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a markdown file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and links to its most useful pages. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard in 2024 and the format is documented at llmstxt.org.

Does Google use llms.txt for AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation on AI features says you do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Normal indexing and helpful content are what count.

Is llms.txt worth adding?

It is cheap and harmless, so it is usually worth a few minutes, especially for documentation-heavy sites. Just do not expect it to change your AI visibility on its own; crawler access and content matter much more.

Where do I put my llms.txt file?

Upload it to the root of your domain so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. The spec also allows files in subpaths, such as /docs/llms.txt, covering the pages under that path.

What should I include in llms.txt?

Start with your site name as an H1, a one or two sentence summary in a blockquote, then short lists of links to your key pages with a brief note on each. Keep secondary pages in an Optional section.
