How to rank in ChatGPT (and get cited in its answers)

To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reach your site, make sure your pages are indexed and easy to quote, describe your business consistently across the web, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT cites for your topic. There is no numbered ranking in ChatGPT. Success means being mentioned, recommended or linked as a source when someone asks about your category, and you measure it by tracking a fixed set of prompts over time.

What ranking in ChatGPT actually means

ChatGPT does not show ten blue links. When it searches the web, it writes an answer and shows links to its sources. OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024 and describes answers that include links to relevant web sources.

So there are three outcomes for your brand on any prompt:

OutcomeWhat it looks likeValue
CitedYour page is linked as a sourceTraffic and credibility
MentionedYour brand is named, with or without a linkAwareness and consideration
AbsentCompetitors or other sources fill the answerNone

The goal is to move more of your important prompts from absent to mentioned, and from mentioned to cited.

Step 1: Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs, and each robots.txt setting is independent:

  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI recommends allowing it if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
  • GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Disallowing it opts you out of training. It is a separate choice from search.
  • ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to these user-initiated visits.

A setup that allows search but opts out of training:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust. Also check your CDN and firewall, since bot protection can block the crawler before robots.txt is ever read.

Step 2: Get indexed in the search engines ChatGPT can draw on

ChatGPT search combines OpenAI's own crawling with results from third-party search providers. Bing is the provider most often named in reporting on ChatGPT search, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap and fix any indexing errors there, alongside Google Search Console. Pages that are hard for search engines to find are hard for ChatGPT to find too.

Step 3: Write answer-first pages

ChatGPT pulls passages to build its answer. Make yours easy to use:

  • Open each key page with a 2-4 sentence direct answer to its main question.
  • Use question headings, then answer directly beneath each.
  • Put steps in numbered lists and comparisons in tables.
  • Include concrete facts such as prices, specs, locations, timeframes and who you serve.
  • Keep important content in HTML text, not locked in images, PDFs or scripts that a crawler may not render.

The 2023 research paper that named generative engine optimization found that adding citations, quotations and statistics were among the more effective ways to raise visibility in AI answers, with results varying by subject. Our generative engine optimization guide covers the full set of content tactics.

Step 4: Make your entity data consistent

When ChatGPT describes your business, it relies on what the web says about you. Conflicting details give it less to go on.

  • Use one business name, one description and one list of services everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review platforms.
  • Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data to your homepage, with sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • Write a factual About page: what you do, where, for whom, and since when.
  • Update or remove old listings with outdated names, addresses or services.

Step 5: Earn mentions on the pages ChatGPT cites

For recommendation prompts like "best CRM for small law firms", the answer often reflects comparison articles, review sites, directories and community discussions. Run your target prompts, look at which sources ChatGPT links, and work on being present there:

  • Ask to be included in relevant roundups and comparisons, with accurate details.
  • Collect reviews on the platforms your buyers use.
  • Answer questions in communities where your audience asks them, as a genuine participant.
  • Publish original data or research that others will want to reference.

This off-site work is often the biggest gap between brands that ChatGPT recommends and brands it skips.

Step 6: Add llms.txt as low-cost housekeeping

llms.txt is a proposed standard for a Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarizes your site and links to your key pages for AI agents. OpenAI's crawler documentation does not say ChatGPT uses it, so do not expect it to move results on its own. It takes minutes, though, and helps any agent that does read it. Our llms.txt generator builds one from your site.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking every OpenAI bot. A blanket block on OpenAI user agents also blocks OAI-SearchBot, which removes you from ChatGPT search results. Decide on GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot separately.
  • Checking one prompt once. Answers vary, so a single check tells you very little. Use a fixed prompt set over time.
  • Only fixing your own site. For recommendation prompts, what other sites say about you often matters as much as your own pages.
  • Inconsistent business details. Different names or service lists across profiles make it harder for ChatGPT to describe you accurately.
  • Thin service pages. A page with two vague sentences gives ChatGPT nothing specific to cite.

Step 7: Track your prompts every month

ChatGPT answers vary by wording, by day and by user context, so single checks can mislead. Build a fixed list of 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask, run them on a schedule, and record for each:

  1. Whether you were mentioned.
  2. Whether you were cited with a link.
  3. How you were described, and whether it was accurate.
  4. Which competitors and sources appeared.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rank #1 in ChatGPT?

Not in the way you rank in Google, because ChatGPT does not show a numbered list of results. It writes an answer and links to sources. The goal is to be mentioned and cited for the prompts that matter to your business, as often as possible.

Which robots.txt setting do I need for ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI uses to surface websites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is a separate crawler for model training, and you can block it without affecting your eligibility for ChatGPT search.

If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT?

Not from ChatGPT search. OpenAI says each crawler setting is independent, so you can disallow GPTBot to opt out of training while allowing OAI-SearchBot to appear in search answers.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. Being cited regularly depends on your content and how often other sites mention you, which usually takes months of steady work.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own crawler plus third-party search providers, and Bing is the provider most often named in reporting. Being well indexed in both Bing and Google is the safe approach.

Do reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

Reviews and third-party mentions are part of what ChatGPT can find when it searches the web about your category. Being present and accurately described on review sites and comparison articles gives it more to work with when recommending options.
