Summary

Picture a florist in Charlotte who spends $800 a month on Google Ads. A rep calls to say ads are coming to AI answers too and asks if she wants in early. She has not seen anything about it and wonders whether this is real or a sales pitch.

It is real, and it is now big news. We counted news articles that put advertising terms next to AI chatbots or AI search products, such as ads-are-coming-to-chatgpt or google-ads-in-ai-mode. GDELT logged 2,811 of them between January 2022 and September 2026.

Two thirds of that coverage came in 2026. From January to September 2026 there were 1,892 such articles, 841% more than in the same months of 2025. Almost none of it speaks to small advertisers, who will be among the first to be pitched.

What we measured

We matched URL slugs where an advertising word (ads, adverts, advertising, sponsored, monetize) appears within a few words of an AI chatbot or AI search product (ChatGPT, chatbots, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, AI search, Copilot, SearchGPT, Claude, Gemini, AI assistants). We excluded slugs about using AI to make ads, ad creative, Super Bowl commercials and similar topics. A spot check of 40 matches found most were about ads appearing in AI answers or AI company ad plans; a few were about AI company marketing campaigns.

Because one wire story can run on hundreds of sites, we report both total URLs and distinct headlines (slugs). Tone is GDELT's average tone score.

Slugs in the data show Google testing ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, yet ChatGPT drew more than four times as much coverage. Small businesses barely feature: 11 articles mentioned small businesses or small advertisers in the slug. Average tone stayed positive, between +0.58 and +3.26 in every month of 2025 and 2026.

What this means

Ads inside AI answers are coming to the tools your customers already use, and the sales calls will follow. Paid placement will sit next to the organic answer, the same way ads sit above Google results today. The organic answer still matters most, because it is what the AI says when nobody pays. That is the part AI search optimization works on, and it does not stop when an ad budget runs out.

Before buying ads in AI tools, find out whether you already appear in the free answers for your most valuable questions. You may already be named there; a free AI visibility audit shows where across ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity, so you can weigh paid placement against Perplexity SEO and other organic work.

Limits

We matched URL slugs, so coverage that mentions AI ads only in the text is missed.

Wire syndication inflates URL counts, especially in January 2026. Distinct headlines give a fairer picture of how many separate stories ran.

Some matched articles are about AI companies' own ad campaigns or monetization plans more broadly.

Product counts depend on slug wording. An article about Google's AI ads that does not name the product in its URL is not counted for Google.
