SEO vs AEO vs GEO: one table, three jobs
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results, AEO gets your content used as the direct answer to a question, and GEO gets your brand cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They are layers of the same stack, not rival strategies. SEO is the base, AEO shapes your content into answers, and GEO extends your reach into AI tools and the sources they trust.

The three disciplines in one table
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank pages in search results and earn clicks | Be the direct answer to a question | Be cited, mentioned or recommended in AI answers |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot |
| Content style | Comprehensive pages targeting a keyword | Short, extractable answers and Q&A blocks | Original facts, clear entity data, depth across a topic |
| Technical focus | Crawlability, indexing, speed, internal links | Structured data, clean HTML structure | AI crawler access, structured data, llms.txt, entity consistency |
| Off-site focus | Backlinks | Light | Mentions on the sites AI tools cite: reviews, lists, press, forums |
| Key metric | Rankings, organic clicks | Snippet and answer ownership | Share of prompts where you are mentioned or cited |
| Typical tools | Search Console, rank trackers | Search Console, SERP feature tracking | Prompt tracking across AI assistants |
How they stack
Think of it as three floors of one building.
SEO is the ground floor. Google says that to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search. If your SEO basics are broken, the upper floors have nothing to stand on.
AEO is the second floor. Once pages are indexed, AEO shapes them so a machine can lift a clean answer: a direct answer up top, question-based headings, FAQ sections and structured data.
GEO is the third floor. AI assistants combine many sources into one response. GEO makes sure AI crawlers can reach you, that your business is described the same way everywhere, and that the third-party pages these tools rely on mention you.
If you want the two-way versions, we break them down in GEO vs SEO, AEO vs SEO and AEO vs GEO.
What each one changes on your site
SEO work: title tags and headings, internal links, page speed, fixing crawl and index errors, and earning backlinks.
AEO work: rewriting intros so they answer the query in 2-4 sentences, adding question headings, building FAQ sections that match what people ask, and adding schema that matches the visible text.
GEO work: updating robots.txt so AI search crawlers are allowed (OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Perplexity documents PerplexityBot), publishing an llms.txt file, aligning your name, address, services and descriptions across profiles, and getting listed on the review sites, directories and articles that AI tools pull from.
Many tasks count twice. A clear answer at the top of a page is AEO, and it also gives an AI model a passage worth quoting, which is GEO.
A worked example: one plumbing company, three layers
Take a plumbing company that wants more water heater installation jobs.
- SEO: it builds a water heater installation page, links to it from the homepage and service menu, makes it load fast on mobile, and fixes a canonical tag that was pointing to the wrong URL. The page gets indexed and starts ranking.
- AEO: it rewrites the top of that page to answer "how much does water heater installation cost" in three sentences with a price range, adds a table comparing tank and tankless units, and adds an FAQ on permits and timing.
- GEO: it allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, makes its name, phone and service area identical on its site, Google Business Profile and directories, and asks for reviews that mention water heater work. Then it checks prompts like "best plumber for tankless water heater install near me" each month.
Each layer reuses the work below it. That is why running them together, as our AI search optimization services do, costs less than three separate projects.
Common mistakes
- Treating GEO as a replacement for SEO. AI features in Google draw from its search index, so dropping SEO undercuts GEO.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Some security tools and CDN settings block unfamiliar bots. If OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot cannot fetch your pages, those tools have less of your content to work with.
- Confusing training bots with search bots. OpenAI separates GPTBot, which collects training data, from OAI-SearchBot, which powers search results. You can block one and allow the other.
- Measuring GEO with SEO metrics only. Rankings do not tell you whether ChatGPT recommends you. You need prompt tracking for that.
- Writing for robots instead of people. Google's guidance for its AI features is the same as for Search: helpful, people-first content.
How to measure all three
| Discipline | What to track | Where |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Rankings, impressions, clicks, indexed pages | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools |
| AEO | Featured snippet ownership, People Also Ask presence, answer impressions | Search Console plus SERP checks |
| GEO | Mention rate, citation rate and description across a fixed prompt set | Manual checks or a prompt tracking tool |
Google notes that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type, so it is not broken out separately there. That is one more reason GEO needs its own prompt tracking.
Where to start
- Run a free AI visibility audit to check AI crawler access, schema, llms.txt and entity signals.
- Fix any indexing or crawl problems first. That is SEO, and it unblocks everything else.
- Rewrite your most important pages answer-first and add FAQs.
- Pick 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask an AI tool and check them every month.
If you would rather hand it off, our AI SEO agency service covers all three layers for a flat monthly fee: month one fixes what the audit finds, then we monitor up to 50 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and keep improving the results. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO ranks your pages in search results. AEO shapes your content so it becomes the direct answer to a question. GEO gets your brand cited and recommended in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
Do I still need SEO if I focus on GEO?
Yes. Google states that pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that is classic SEO. Weak SEO limits how much GEO can achieve.
Which should I do first?
Start with SEO fundamentals like crawling and indexing, because the other two depend on them. Then make key pages answer-first for AEO, and add AI crawler access, entity consistency and mentions for GEO.
Are AEO and GEO just buzzwords for SEO?
They share a lot with SEO, but each adds real work. AEO adds answer formatting and structured Q&A. GEO adds AI crawler access, prompt tracking and off-site mentions that classic SEO reporting does not cover.
How long does each take to show results?
It depends on your site and market, so there is no reliable fixed timeline. Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers can take effect quickly; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search crawler take about 24 hours to register. Content and authority work usually takes months.
Can one provider handle SEO, AEO and GEO?
Yes, and it is usually more efficient because the foundation is shared. Look for a provider that reports on both search metrics and prompt-level AI visibility.
