What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is the practice of optimizing your website and brand so large language models, the AI systems behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, mention, recommend and cite you in their answers. It covers what the model can retrieve live from the web and what it already associates with your brand. In practice it means letting AI search crawlers in, writing quotable answer-first content, keeping your entity data consistent and earning mentions on sites the models trust.

LLM SEO defined

LLM stands for large language model: the kind of AI model that powers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and the answer engine inside Perplexity. LLM SEO is the work of making those models more likely to talk about you, accurately and favorably, when people ask questions in your market.

It is sometimes shortened to LLMO (large language model optimization). It overlaps almost entirely with generative engine optimization and AI SEO. The LLM label puts the focus on the model itself, including what it "knows" about your brand, not only which pages it retrieves.

Two ways an LLM learns about you

An LLM can draw on your brand in two ways, and LLM SEO addresses both.

Live retrievalBackground knowledge
What it isThe assistant searches the web while answering and reads current pagesWhat the model learned during training
ExamplesChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI ModeA chatbot answering without browsing
Controlled bySearch crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and GooglebotTraining data, which you influence only indirectly
How fast changes showDays to weeks after recrawlingOnly when a new model is trained
What helpsCrawlable, answer-first pages with specific factsA consistent, widely mentioned brand across the web

OpenAI's documentation makes the split clear. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that determines whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate crawler for content that may be used to train its models. You can block one and allow the other.

Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in its results and is not used to crawl content for training AI foundation models.

Core LLM SEO tactics

  1. Allow AI search crawlers. Check robots.txt and firewall rules for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Decide on training bots like GPTBot separately.
  2. Write answer-first. State the answer in the first two to four sentences under a question-style heading. Models lift passages, so make each one stand alone.
  3. Add statistics, quotations and sources. The 2023 paper that coined generative engine optimization tested this on a 10,000-query benchmark and found these methods improved visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing did little.
  4. Make your entity unambiguous. Same company name, description and category everywhere. Add Organization schema. Keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings current.
  5. Get mentioned on other sites. Reviews, comparison articles, forums and industry lists shape how models describe you, both in live answers and in future training data.
  6. Offer an llms.txt file. llms.txt is a proposal, published in September 2024, for a Markdown file at your site root that gives LLMs a curated map of your key pages. Google says it does not need AI-specific files for its AI features, so treat it as an inexpensive extra. Our llms.txt generator builds one for free.

LLM SEO vs traditional SEO

Traditional SEOLLM SEO
AudienceSearch engine ranking systems, then peopleLanguage models, then people
OutputA ranked linkA sentence that names or cites you
SignalsRelevance, links, page experienceAll of those, plus quotable passages and brand mentions
MeasurementRankings and clicksMentions and citations across a set of prompts

LLM SEO depends on SEO. Live retrieval runs on search indexes, and Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. For a broader look at the overlap, see what is AI SEO and SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

How to measure LLM SEO

No LLM provider gives brands a dashboard. You measure by asking.

  • Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask.
  • Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
  • Record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited with a link, how you are described and which competitors appear.
  • Track the share of prompts where you appear over several months, since answers vary from run to run.

Software can automate this; our list of LLM SEO tools compares the options. To check the technical basics first, run the free AI visibility checker.

Common LLM SEO mistakes

  • Blocking every AI bot at once. Blocking GPTBot to opt out of training is a fair choice. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot at the same time removes you from those engines' search answers.
  • Expecting instant changes to model knowledge. Live answers can update within days. What a model learned in training changes only with a new model.
  • Writing for the model instead of the reader. Pages stuffed with keywords or written as bot bait are less useful, and the GEO research found keyword stuffing did little.
  • Inconsistent brand facts. If your site, directories and profiles disagree on what you do, the model's picture of you will be fuzzy too.

Frequently asked questions

What does LLM SEO mean?

LLM SEO means optimizing your website and brand so large language models like those behind ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and cite you. It covers both pages the AI retrieves live and what the model already associates with your brand. It overlaps heavily with generative engine optimization and AI SEO.

Is LLM SEO the same as GEO?

Nearly. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the term from a 2023 research paper and focuses on being cited in AI-generated answers. LLM SEO uses the model as its frame and pays a bit more attention to brand associations in training data. The tactics are almost identical.

Can I influence what ChatGPT knows about my brand?

You can influence live answers directly by allowing OAI-SearchBot and publishing clear, accurate pages, because ChatGPT search reads current web content. What a model learned in training changes only when a new model is trained, and you influence it indirectly through consistent, widely published information about your brand.

Should I block GPTBot?

That depends on whether you want your content used for model training. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training and OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search, so you can block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search answers. Do not block OAI-SearchBot if you want to be visible there.

Do I need an llms.txt file for LLM SEO?

No, it is optional. llms.txt is a proposed standard that gives AI agents a curated map of your site, and some tools read it. Google says you do not need AI-specific text files to appear in its AI features.
