Summary

Picture a dental practice manager who gets three cold emails in one week. One offers GEO, one offers AEO and one offers AI SEO. They seem to describe the same thing, getting the practice mentioned in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers. She wonders which one is real and which name will stick.

We counted news articles whose URLs name any of the four common terms: generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLM optimization (LLMO) and AI SEO, including AI visibility. Between January 2022 and September 2026, GDELT logged 2,495 such articles.

Almost all of them are recent. In 2024 there were 87 in the whole year. In the first nine months of 2026 there were 1,647, about 183 a month. GEO was the most common name for most of that rise, but AI SEO and AI visibility overtook it in April 2026.

What we measured

We matched article URL slugs against each term and its spelled-out version. Because GEO and AEO are short and have other meanings (a prison company, a satellite orbit, a customs program, a stock ticker), we only counted them when the same part of the URL also mentioned SEO, AI, ChatGPT, LLMs, search, visibility, optimization or marketing, and we excluded known off-topic phrases.

AI SEO includes slugs with ai-seo, seo-for-ai, ai-search-optimization, seo-for-llms and ai-visibility. An article can use more than one term, so term counts add up to more than the total. A spot check found a small number of 2022 GEO matches were about geographic marketing, before the term took on its AI meaning.

What this means

GEO, AEO, LLMO and AI SEO describe the same goal: getting your business found, named and cited in AI answers. The names are still settling, and the news data shows AI SEO and AI visibility gaining ground in English while GEO dominates in Europe. Do not let the label decide who you hire. Ask what they will check, what they will change and how they will measure it. Whatever they call it, the outcome you are paying for is AI brand visibility you can see in real answers.

A good first step under any name is a baseline: which AI tools mention you today, for which questions, and with what facts. Our free AI visibility audit gives you that baseline before you spend on generative engine optimization services or anything with a different name.

Limits

We matched URL slugs. Articles that use these terms only in the text are not counted, so true usage is higher.

Short acronyms are ambiguous. Our context rules remove most off-topic GEO and AEO matches but some will remain, especially before 2024.

Press release syndication repeats the same text across many URLs, which inflates counts for terms favored by agencies.

AI visibility is also used for some non-search topics. Most matches we checked were about brand visibility in AI tools.
