Summary
Picture a small estate planning firm in Tennessee that built its website around clear explainers: what probate is, how a living trust works, when you need a power of attorney. For years those pages brought in people who would later book a consultation. Now many of those people ask an AI assistant first and only call when they are ready to hire.
We tracked 233 Wikipedia articles that explain legal concepts across family, estate, business, employment, injury and criminal law. Together they lost 46.9% of their readers between 2022 and the past 12 months.
Family and estate law fell the most, down 52.5%. These are the questions ordinary people ask at stressful moments, and many may now be asking AI tools for a first answer.
What we measured
We built a seed list of legal concepts, matched each to its English Wikipedia title, and summed desktop and mobile web views for calendar year 2022 and for October 2025 to September 2026.
We excluded articles with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way, which usually signals a rename, and report totals, medians and the share of articles that gained or lost more than half their views.
Family and estate law explainers lost more than half their readers

Injury, court and criminal law pages held up a little better, partly because some of them, like Habeas corpus and H-1B visa, were in the news.
The drop came in 2025 and 2026
Legal concept pages held steady for two years after ChatGPT launched.

The big steps down came in 2025 and again in the past 12 months, after AI answers moved into the main search results page. Family and estate law had already started slipping in 2023.

Only 9 of 233 legal pages gained readers. Gains were mostly tied to news, such as Benefit corporation (up 129.1%) and H-1B visa (up 24.5%).
What this means
Law firms have relied on explainer pages to attract people early in a legal problem. Those people now often start with an AI assistant, which gives a general answer and, when it is asked, a recommendation. The research visit to your site may not happen, but the recommendation can. Earning that recommendation is the part of the job an AI search optimization agency focuses on for law firms.
Make your firm easy for AI tools to describe correctly: practice areas, locations, fee structure, attorney bios and real case types, stated plainly on your site and in your listings. Does your firm come up when someone asks an AI for a lawyer in your area? A free AI visibility audit answers that and gives you a baseline for AI brand visibility going forward.
Limits
Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.
We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.
The seed list was built by hand and focuses on US legal concepts.
Legal pages in the news, such as immigration and criminal procedure topics, can rise or fall with events.
This is reading data only and says nothing about any firm's results.
