Summary
Picture a marketing manager at a regional dental group being asked by her CEO whether they should still pay for SEO or switch to this new thing called GEO. She does what many people do and looks it up. The reading data from Wikipedia shows that a lot of people are asking the same question.
We tracked the Wikipedia articles on search engine optimization and on the newer ideas around AI search, such as generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization. Readers of the SEO article fell by more than half between 2022 and the past 12 months.
The GEO article went from nothing to more than 100,000 views a year in about 18 months. It has not overtaken SEO. It now draws roughly one reader for every 3.8 who read the SEO page.
What we measured
We summed monthly desktop and mobile web views for each article, then grouped them into an established SEO cluster and an AI search cluster. We compared calendar year 2022 with October 2025 to September 2026 and looked at monthly views from 2024 onward to check for a crossover.
The Generative engine optimization article had no recorded views in our data before 2025. We use the first month with at least 100 views (April 2025) as a practical start date, not as the article's official creation date.
The SEO article lost more than half its readers

What this means
Interest in classic SEO is falling and interest in AI search is rising, but the two have not swapped places. Most people are still trying to understand the basics of being found, and a growing share now want to know how that works inside AI answers. For a business owner, the honest answer is that you need both: a site search engines can crawl and rank, and content AI tools can find, trust and quote. Good AI SEO services treat those as one job rather than two separate budgets.
In practice that means clear service pages, accurate business details everywhere you are listed, real reviews, and content that answers specific questions plainly. If you want to know how AI assistants describe your business today, a free AI visibility audit is the place to start, before you spend anything on generative engine optimization services.
Limits
Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.
We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.
These are small articles, so a single link from a busy page or a news story can move monthly views a lot.
Wikipedia reading reflects curiosity about a topic, not how much businesses spend on it.
Some AI search titles are recent or were renamed, so cluster totals before 2025 are near zero by construction.
