Summary

Picture a financial planner in Phoenix who wrote a plain-English page on how a Roth IRA works. It used to bring in a few new leads every month from people researching retirement. This year the page gets a fraction of the traffic. The people asking that question now get a tidy answer from an AI assistant, often with no link at all.

We tracked 247 Wikipedia articles that explain personal finance ideas such as APR, escrow, index funds, term life insurance and adjusted gross income. The typical article lost half its readers between 2022 and the past 12 months.

Tax pages show the sharpest single-year change. In the 2025 tax season they were still above their 2022 level. In the 2026 tax season they drew about half as many views as a year earlier.

What we measured

We built a seed list of finance concepts in four groups and matched each to its English Wikipedia title. We summed desktop and mobile web views and compared calendar year 2022 with October 2025 to September 2026.

We excluded articles with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way, which usually signals a rename. For tax season we compared January to April views in each year from 2022 to 2026.

The 2026 tax season was the first full filing season after AI answers had become routine in search results. The same months also fall after Wikimedia changed how it filters automated traffic, so some of the drop may be bots removed from the count.

What this means

Banks, credit unions, insurance agencies, tax preparers and financial advisors have long used explainer content to meet people early. Those explainers now compete with AI answers that summarize the same ideas in a few lines. If your growth plan depends on 'what is an escrow account' traffic, plan for less of it. An AI SEO consultant would point that effort toward pages about your firm, your fees and the clients you serve.

What AI tools still need is a trusted local or specialist source to recommend. Publish clear pages on your services, fees, credentials and who you serve, and keep your business listings consistent. Being named when someone asks for a tax preparer or advisor near them is the result SEO for AI search is meant to improve, and our free AI visibility audit tells you whether it is happening yet.

Limits

Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.

We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.

The seed list was built by hand and focuses on US personal finance terms.

2022 views of some investing pages, such as Recession and Inflation, were lifted by economic news, which adds to their measured decline.

Tax season is approximated as January to April for US filers; English Wikipedia readers are worldwide.
