Summary

Picture a home inspection company in Raleigh that sees its Search Console impressions hold steady while clicks slide month after month. The owner suspects Google's AI summaries are answering people's questions before they reach her site. She is not alone, and the press has noticed.

We counted news articles whose URLs connect AI search or chatbots with website traffic, clicks or visitors from search. GDELT logged 597 of them from January 2023 to September 2026, with 451 distinct headlines.

Most of the coverage is recent. 2025 set the record with 267 articles, nearly three times the 2024 total. More than a third of all these articles use words like drop, decline or kill in the headline URL, and almost half are about publishers and news sites, the businesses that reported the losses first.

What we measured

We matched URL slugs that mention an AI search product, AI summaries or chatbots and also mention web, site, publisher, news, referral or search traffic, clicks or visitors, within the same part of the URL. We excluded road traffic, air traffic, security stories and articles about traffic to ChatGPT itself.

A spot check of 50 matches before final cleanup found about 40 on topic. Remaining off-topic matches include AI marketing tools that promise more traffic and a few pages whose slug did not show the subject. Tone is GDELT's average tone score.

Press Gazette, a UK trade title for publishers, is in the top five, which fits a story that publishers have been telling about their own business. By domain ending, .com sites carried 451 of the 597 articles, followed by UK sites (21), .net (15), German and Indian sites (14 each). English-language sources wrote 551 (92.3%).

What this means

Publishers felt the click loss first because they live on search traffic, but the same mechanism affects any business that answers customer questions on its website. If AI answers summarize your service pages and FAQs, some people will never visit. The visits you keep are worth more, and the mentions inside the AI answer start to matter as much as the click. Measuring both is part of what AI search optimization services should report on each month.

Track clicks and impressions separately in Search Console, and check whether AI answers name you for the questions that used to bring visitors. Which of those questions now end in an AI answer, and is your business in it? A free AI visibility audit maps both, and the gaps it finds are what our answer engine optimization services work on.

Limits

We matched URL slugs. Articles that discuss traffic only in the text are missed, and some matches are tangential, such as tools promising more AI search traffic.

Counts are modest, so a single syndicated story can lift a month.

Loss words in a URL do not always mean the article reports a loss. Some headlines ask whether traffic is falling or argue that it is not.

Non-English coverage is undercounted because the terms are in English.
