KGWritten by Kriszta GrenyoPublished October 20264 min read

Articles about zero-click search went from a handful a year to about 10 a month in 2026. Even so, the phrase still shows up in spyware stories about twice as often as in search stories.

Summary

Picture a roofing company owner who checks his Google Search Console report and sees impressions up but clicks flat. His marketing agency calls it zero-click search: Google, and now AI answers, give people what they need on the results page, so they never visit a site. Two years ago almost nobody outside SEO used the phrase. We wanted to see if that has changed.

We pulled every article in the GDELT news database since 2015 with zero-click in its URL and sorted them by topic. Of 1,054 articles, 224 are about search, and the rest are mostly about phone hacks that need no click from the victim.

Zero-click search coverage jumped to 87 articles in the first nine months of 2026, after only 13 across 2022, 2023 and 2024 combined. That is about 10 stories a month. It is still a small topic in absolute terms, and the term belongs to the security beat more than the marketing beat.

What we measured

GDELT does not store article text, so we searched URL slugs for zero-click and its spellings in German, French and Spanish. We sorted each article by other words in its slug: hacking, spyware and vulnerability terms went to security; search, SEO, Google, traffic, publisher, AI and marketing terms went to search; known off-topic uses like a pizza ordering app or analytics software went to other.

We read every slug in the search group, for every year, and moved mislabeled security and product stories out. Counts are unique URLs, and the 2026 figures cover January 1 to October 20 unless noted as January to September.

Zero-click search had a first wave in 2019, went quiet, then came back bigger

87zero-click search articles from January to September 2026

The phrase first got news traction in August 2019, when slugs like over-50-of-searches-on-google-result-in-zero-clicks spread a clickstream analysis around the trade press. Coverage held at 17 to 21 articles a year through 2020, then faded.

From 2022 to 2024 there were 13 zero-click search articles in total. In 2025 there were 66, and in 2026 there have been 94 so far. The return lines up with the rollout of Google AI Overviews and the growth of chatbot answers. Many 2025 and 2026 slugs pair zero-click with ai, ai-overviews, chatgpt, geo or aeo.

Monthly counts are still small, so a single syndicated story can swing a month. March 2026 shows that: 43 articles, many of them the same piece about rising zero-click searches republished across a network of local news sites.

Leaving March 2026 out, the monthly average for 2026 is 5.5, about the same as the 2025 average. The step change happened in mid 2025, when monthly counts moved from 0 to 6 into a 7 to 14 range that held from July 2025 to January 2026. Outside March, most 2026 months have been back at 2 to 6.

Half the top outlets are search marketing publications. The rest are business and advertising titles. General news desks rarely use the phrase in a URL, which suggests most readers meet the idea under other names, such as AI answers or Google keeping traffic.

In the news, zero-click still means spyware more often than search

Zero-click is also the name for phone exploits that infect a device without the owner tapping anything. Those stories dominated the term from 2020 to 2024.

Search stories made up 21.3% of all zero-click articles since 2016. Their share has grown: in 2026 it is 30.1% (94 of 312), against 8.6% in 2021 (12 of 140). Tone splits sharply. Zero-click search articles average about +1.0, while zero-click security articles averaged -5.46 in 2025.

What this means

Zero-click search has moved from an SEO conference topic to something business media covers every month. Customers and owners now hear that fewer searches end in a visit, and many will ask their marketing provider what to do about it. A fair reply from anyone selling AI SEO services starts with what the AI answers say about that business today. Rankings alone no longer tell you whether people see your business, because the answer often appears before any link.

The practical response is to make sure the answer itself names you: accurate details in the sources AI tools cite, clear service and location pages, and a way to check what the answers say. Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features mention your business when customers ask is easy to test with a free AI visibility audit, and the answer tells you whether answer engine optimization services are worth it for you yet.

Limits

Counts are small. A single syndicated article can add dozens of URLs in one month, as in March 2026.

We matched URL slugs only, so articles that discuss zero-click search without the phrase in the URL are not counted, and the true volume of coverage is higher.

Topic sorting used slug keywords. We checked the search group by hand, but a few mixed or vague slugs may sit in the wrong group.

GDELT's article volume changes year to year, which affects raw counts.
