Summary
Picture a marketing agency owner in Denver who has just finished a small survey about how her clients show up in ChatGPT. She wants a journalist to cover it, but she does not know which outlets actually write about AI search and which only mention it once. Pitching the wrong 50 reporters wastes a week.
We ranked every outlet in the GDELT news database by how many AI search articles it published between January 2022 and September 2026. The topic is spread thin: 3,362 outlets covered it, but 40.4% did so just once.
A small group does most of the work. The top 25 outlets wrote 21.8% of all AI search articles. Search Engine Journal leads with 450, and the rest of the top 10 mixes Indian business media, tech sites and global business titles.
What we measured
We counted unique AI search articles per outlet, using GDELT's SourceCommonName field, which groups an outlet's subdomains under one name. AI search articles are those whose URL slug names Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or SGE, ChatGPT search or SearchGPT, Perplexity, or AI search in general, including common German, French, Spanish and Italian phrasings.
We sorted the top 60 outlets into four groups by what they mainly publish: search and marketing trade press, tech press, general and business news, and press release or syndication sites. This counts who writes about AI search, not which outlets AI tools cite.
Search Engine Journal tops the list, with Indian business media close behind

Trade press is a small share of volume but steady: its share rose from 13.8% overall to 17.2% in 2026. The bigger shift is press releases. In 2026, wire services and the networks of local sites that republish them made up 27.2% of the top outlets' AI search articles, as agencies and software firms announce AI visibility services.
Most outlets cover AI search rarely
The long tail is long. Only 416 outlets published 10 or more AI search articles in nearly five years.

For anyone pitching a story, the 416 outlets with 10 or more articles are the realistic targets. The other 2,946 covered the topic once or a few times, usually around a big launch.

The newcomers include a German business daily, a hospitality trade site and an insurance trade title. Industry trade press picking up the topic may be a sign that AI search is starting to be treated as a sector issue, not only a tech story.
What this means
If you publish original research about AI search, the realistic audience of regular writers is a few hundred outlets, and the top of that list is a mix of search trade press, tech sites and business media. Industry trade titles in your own sector are newer to the topic and may be easier to reach. Coverage in those titles also feeds SEO for AI search, since AI tools pull from the press they can read.
The same logic applies to your own visibility. AI tools draw on sources that cover a topic often. Getting mentioned by outlets that write about your industry regularly can make it more likely AI answers cite you. Our free AI visibility audit lists the sources AI tools cite for questions about your business, which is the target list for any GEO agency doing outreach.
Limits
Counts are articles matched by URL slug. Outlets with numeric or non-Latin URLs are undercounted, so some large non-English outlets may be missing from the ranking.
Outlet types were assigned by hand for the top 60 outlets only.
Press release and syndication sites repeat the same text across many URLs, which inflates their counts relative to original reporting.
This ranks who writes about AI search. It says nothing about which outlets AI tools cite.
