Summary
Picture an admissions director at a regional university who notices that prospective students arrive at campus tours with sharper questions than ever, about costs, majors and acceptance rates. Many of them got their first overview from an AI assistant, not from browsing college websites or reference pages.
We tracked Wikipedia articles for 2,304 US colleges and universities and compared reading during the fall and early-winter application season. Between 2021-22 and 2025-26, application-season views fell 14.3%.
The drop was steepest for the most famous schools. Ivy League pages lost 18.7% of their application-season readers. Community college pages lost just 6.0%, and the typical community college page gained readers.
What we measured
We pulled every English Wikipedia article with University, College or Institute of Technology in its title and at least 1,000 views in 2022, kept those that name a US state, contain Community College or are one of the eight Ivy League schools, and sorted them into four types using title rules. We assigned each a Census region from the state in its title.
We compared September to January views in 2021-22 with the same months in 2025-26, and the ratio of those months to the following February to August. We excluded pages whose views changed more than 20 times in either direction. Many private universities whose names do not include a state are not in the sample.

Well-known schools are the kind people can ask AI assistants about in general terms: how hard is it to get in, what is it known for. Questions about a local community college are more specific, and readers still go looking for details.
The Northeast lost a quarter of its application-season readers
Change in application-season views by region (schools with a state in the title):
| Region | Schools (N) | Sep 2021 to Jan 2022 | Sep 2025 to Jan 2026 | % change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | 273 | 3,935,205 | 2,954,415 | -24.9% |
| Midwest | 389 | 3,330,494 | 2,730,827 | -18.0% |
| South | 696 | 7,837,061 | 6,978,057 | -11.0% |
| West | 436 | 5,965,373 | 5,479,886 | -8.1% |

Region is taken from the state named in each article title, so schools without a state in their name (including the Ivy League and many community colleges) are not in this table.
The application season matters more than ever
Over the full year, college pages fell 27.2%. The off-season fell even more.

|---|---|---|---|
| Ivy League | 1.03 | 1.42 | -31.8% |
| Public state universities | 1.10 | 1.34 | -27.9% |
| Other four-year schools | 1.05 | 1.35 | -25.5% |
| Community and technical colleges | 0.97 | 1.13 | -16.5% |

People who are actually applying still read up on schools during the season. Casual reading at other times of year has dropped away faster, which suggests that general curiosity about colleges has moved to AI answers first.
What this means
For colleges and universities, the research stage is shifting. Prospective students and parents ask AI assistants for overviews, rankings and fit before they visit any website. The schools with the most name recognition saw the biggest drop in reference reading, possibly because AI can summarize them easily.
Make sure AI tools can find accurate, current facts about your programs, costs, aid, deadlines and outcomes on your own site. Smaller and community colleges have an opening here, since specific questions still send people looking for details. Before hiring an AI SEO agency for enrollment, run a free AI visibility audit to see how AI assistants describe your school today.
Limits
Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.
We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.
Classification by title rules is approximate. Private universities without a state in their name are mostly missing, and some state names match schools in other states (for example a school named after a person called Washington).
The 2021-22 application season includes September to December 2021, the first months in our data.
Application calendars vary, and English Wikipedia readers include international students.
