Summary
Picture a car dealership's sales manager who notices that buyers walk in knowing more than ever. They have compared trims, ranges and towing numbers before they arrive. Some of that research now happens in AI chat, but people still look up the specific model they want by name.
We tracked 207 Wikipedia articles for current car models and compared their readers in 2022 and the past 12 months. Car model pages lost 16.8% of their views, far less than the 40% to 60% drops we found for explainer topics such as health, law, finance or programming.
Within cars, the expected story did not hold. Electric model pages fell 26.1%, more than gas models at 15.4%. SUVs and trucks, the bulk of US sales, held up best.
What we measured
We built a seed list of car models sold in the US, tagged each by body style and powertrain, and matched it to its English Wikipedia title. We summed desktop and mobile web views and compared calendar year 2022 with October 2025 to September 2026.
We excluded models with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way. That means electric models launched after 2022 are not in the comparison, which tilts the electric group toward older models. Per the study's scope, no make or model is named.
Car pages held up better than any other topic we tracked
Car models are something people look up by name, and that kind of reading has changed least.

What this means
Dealers can take some comfort here. People still research the specific models they want by name, and that kind of reading has held up far better than general explainers. But the 2025 and 2026 drop suggests AI answers may be starting to handle model comparisons too. That is where AI SEO services for dealers come in: keeping inventory and model pages accurate enough for AI tools to quote.
Make sure AI tools can find accurate, current facts about your inventory, pricing, incentives and service department, and that your listings and reviews are consistent. When a buyer asks which dealer near them has a model in stock, you want to be the answer. Our free AI visibility audit checks whether you are, and it is how we start every AI search optimization engagement.
Limits
Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.
We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.
Models launched after 2022 are excluded by design, so the electric group skews to older models.
Model pages can rise or fall with recalls, redesigns and news, independent of AI.
The hybrid group is small (5 models).
