Summary

Picture the owner of a 12-person landscaping company who needs new payroll software. A few years ago she would have searched, opened a handful of product pages and review sites, then made a shortlist. Now she asks an AI assistant for the three best options for a small business and starts from that list.

We tracked Wikipedia articles for 151 business software products across five categories. The median product page lost 47.2% of its readers between 2022 and the past 12 months.

The size of the drop depends a lot on the category. Ecommerce and website tools fell the most. Accounting, payroll and HR software fell the least, perhaps because those purchases involve compliance and money, and buyers still dig into the details.

What we measured

We built a seed list of well-known business software products, grouped by category, and matched each to its English Wikipedia title. We summed desktop and mobile web views and compared calendar year 2022 with October 2025 to September 2026.

Because a few very large product pages had unusual 2022 traffic, we lead with the median change per product rather than category totals. We excluded products with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way.

Ecommerce and website tools may be where small businesses most often ask an AI assistant to pick for them. Accounting and payroll buyers seem to keep researching specific products.

Office and collaboration totals dropped early because several very large pages had unusually high 2022 traffic, which is why the medians above are the better guide. Every other category fell most sharply in 2025.

Software research is still mostly a desktop activity

Desktop and mobile web fell by similar amounts. Software buyers do their research on work computers, the same setting where AI assistants are now built into browsers, office suites and operating systems.

What this means

If you sell software to small businesses, assume that a growing share of buyers will meet your product first in an AI-generated shortlist. Category pages and generic comparison posts are losing readers, especially in ecommerce and collaboration tools. For software companies, SEO for AI search means being one of the names on that shortlist, with features and pricing described correctly.

Make it easy for AI tools to describe your product accurately: clear pricing, who it is for, integrations, and honest comparisons on your own site, plus reviews on the sites AI reads. Then check whether you appear when buyers ask for options. A free AI visibility audit does that check in one pass, and it tells you whether AI search optimization services are worth paying for in your category.

Limits

Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.

We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.

The seed list was built by hand and leans toward widely known products; it is not a full market census.

Company articles can mix product interest with news about the company itself, such as earnings, lawsuits or acquisitions.

Several large product pages show unusual 2022 traffic, so category totals are less reliable than medians.
