Key findings

  1. 1

In the median launch, daily AI search coverage in the launch week was 2.2 times the daily rate of the two weeks before.

8 of 11 launches at least doubled daily coverage and a ninth nearly did, and 9 of 11 peaked on launch day or the day after.

  3. 3

In 7 of 11 launches, daily coverage fell below half its peak the very next day.

  4. 4

The first three days carried a median 78.3% of all launch-week coverage.

  5. 5

The SearchGPT announcement in July 2024 drew the most coverage: 670 articles in its launch week and 387 in a single day.

  6. 6

Early launches drew bigger relative spikes: a median 10.0x for 2023 and 2024 launches against 2.0x in 2025, when baseline coverage was already higher.

Summary

Picture a marketing consultant in Atlanta with a short study ready about how local businesses show up in AI answers. She can send it to reporters today or wait. If Google or OpenAI announces something next week, will her pitch get lost, or ride the wave? Timing matters, and the news cycle around AI search launches turns out to be short.

We took 11 AI search launches since 2023, from the Bing chatbot and Bard announcements to Google AI Mode and the ChatGPT Atlas browser, and counted AI search articles in GDELT for each day from two weeks before to two weeks after.

In the median launch, daily coverage in the launch week ran 2.2 times higher than in the two weeks before. The spike is sharp and brief: most launches peaked on the day or the day after, and in 7 of 11 cases coverage fell by more than half the following day.

What we measured

For each launch date, we counted unique AI search articles per day from 14 days before to 14 days after, using GDELT's processing date. AI search articles are those whose URL slug names Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or SGE, ChatGPT search or SearchGPT, Perplexity, or AI search in general.

We compared the average daily count in the launch week (day 0 to day 6) with the average over the 14 days before. We also recorded the peak day, how many days it took for daily coverage to fall below half the peak, and the average GDELT tone before and during the launch week. Launch dates are the public announcement dates. We left out the October 28, 2024 AI Overviews expansion because its window overlaps the ChatGPT search launch three days later.

The two launches that did not come close to doubling both had busy baselines. The two weeks before AI Mode's expansion to 180 countries included the peak of coverage about Perplexity's offer for Chrome, with 308 articles on a single day. The ChatGPT Atlas window also overlapped other Perplexity news. In quieter weeks, a launch stands out much more.

Day 1 is usually the biggest day, likely because many outlets publish their write-ups after the announcement event or overnight. By day 3, daily coverage is back near baseline for most launches. A pitch sent on day 4 competes with far fewer launch stories than one sent on day 1.

Launches lift the tone of AI search coverage a little

7 of 11launches had a more positive average tone in launch week than before

Launch announcements tend to be written in upbeat product language, which shows up in GDELT's tone score.

The median change was +0.28. The biggest lift came with ChatGPT search in October 2024, from -1.38 to +0.77, after a negative stretch of coverage in the days before. The ChatGPT Atlas week moved the other way, from +0.49 to -1.04, in a week that overlapped a lawsuit against an AI search company.

What this means

If you want coverage for your own AI search news or research, avoid launch days and the day after, when reporters are busy with the big announcement. The data suggests days 3 to 7 after a launch are calmer, while interest in the topic is still high. Tie your angle to what the launch means for small businesses, which launch coverage rarely covers.

Launches also change what customers see in AI answers, sometimes overnight. After each major launch, check how AI tools describe your business. Start with a free AI visibility audit of what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features say about you today, so any answer engine optimization services you buy later have a baseline to be measured against.

Limits

Launch dates are public announcement dates. Some features rolled out gradually, so coverage can lead or lag the date.

Daily counts use GDELT's processing date, which can trail publication by a few hours.

Other AI search news can fall inside a launch window. We flagged the two clearest cases rather than adjusting the numbers.

Articles are matched by URL slug, and coverage that names a product only in the text is not counted. ChatGPT Atlas coverage is counted only when its slug also mentions AI search terms.
