New GitHub Projects for AI Agents That Browse Websites Grew 22-Fold, From 73 a Quarter in Early 2024 to 1,639 in Late 2025

Picture a homeowner who asks an AI assistant to find three local electricians with openings next week and fill in their quote forms. The assistant opens a browser, visits each site, reads the services page and types into the contact form. If the form breaks or the details are hidden, that electrician gets skipped.

Browser agents are AI programs that operate a web browser the way a person does: they click, scroll, read and fill in forms. Open-source frameworks make it easy for any developer to build one, and many AI assistants now include the feature.

New browser agent projects on GitHub grew from 73 a quarter in early 2024 to 1,639 in late 2025. The tools that will visit your website on a customer's behalf are being built at a fast pace.

What we measured

We used GH Archive, the public log of GitHub events, in Google BigQuery. We counted original repositories whose names describe browser agents, browser automation for AI, web agents, computer use or browser control through MCP. We removed probable forks and used each repo's first recorded event as its creation date.

For eight leading open-source frameworks we followed each repo by its permanent ID and counted stars by half year. GH Archive recorded far fewer stars after mid-2025, so we also divided stars by all stars recorded in the same period. Framework names appear only in adoption counts.

Browser agent projects took off in late 2024

The jump in Q4 2024 coincides with the release of several widely used frameworks and the first computer-use models. Growth kept going through 2025. Lower counts after July 2026 partly reflect gaps in GH Archive's own data collection.

Developer attention moved to browser agents in 2025

Attention peaked in the first half of 2025, when browser agents drew 2,724 of every million stars on GitHub. It has settled since, but remains about three times the early 2024 level.

One framework leads, and MCP is the new delivery format

Among new projects, MCP servers that let assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT drive a browser went from 18 of 631 repos in 2024 (2.9%) to 1,172 of 4,688 in 2025 (25.0%). Computer-use projects grew too, from 466 in 2025 to 898 in 2026.

What this means

Agents will increasingly visit your site for customers: checking prices, comparing services, booking appointments or filling out quote forms. They read the page like a careful but impatient visitor. Limits

We matched repo names only. Browser agent projects without our keywords in their names are missed, and some matches may be general browser automation tools.

The eight-framework list is our selection of leading open-source projects. Commercial agents built into AI assistants do not appear on GitHub.

GH Archive recorded far fewer star events from mid-2025 onward and had collection gaps in October 2025 and August to October 2026. Raw 2026 counts are understated, which is why we use per-million shares.

First seen is the first recorded public event. Fork removal is a name-based heuristic.
