Summary

Picture a pest control company owner who searches for 'how to get rid of carpenter ants' and finds ten articles that say the same thing in the same order. Several of them were likely written by a script. The tools to produce that kind of content are free, and more appear on GitHub every week.

AI content generators take a keyword or topic and write a blog post, article or social post with a language model. Some publish straight to a website. They let anyone produce hundreds of pages a day.

New open-source AI content generators grew from about 339 a quarter in 2023 to nearly 2,000 a quarter in early 2026, a 485.4% increase. Generic AI content is getting cheaper to make, so original information is what stands out.

What we measured

We used GH Archive, the public log of GitHub events, in Google BigQuery. We kept repositories whose names describe blog, article, post or content generation, writing or automation, and that also name AI, an LLM, GPT, an agent or a major AI model. We removed probable forks and used each repo's first recorded event as its creation date. We started in April 2023 to avoid counting older repos.

We counted new repos per quarter, checked names for publishing targets such as WordPress and social platforms, flagged agents and MCP servers, and compared how many repos earned a recorded star.

The tools have become a commodity. Each new generator gets less attention, likely because dozens of near-identical options already exist. The 2026 figure is also held down by lower star capture in GH Archive that year.

What this means

Anyone can now publish hundreds of AI-written articles on any topic in your industry. Search engines and AI assistants see a flood of near-identical content, and they have little reason to cite one copy over another. Rewriting what already ranks will not set your business apart. The AI SEO services worth paying for help you publish what only your business knows.

What stands out is information only you have: your prices, your local experience, your own data and real customer questions. Pages built on that are more likely to get quoted by AI answers. Two questions shape where LLM SEO effort should go: which pages AI assistants already use, and where original content would help most. A free AI visibility audit answers both.

Limits

We matched repo names only. Many AI writing tools do not say so in their name, and some name matches may be general content tools.

Publishing targets come from repo names, so the WordPress and social figures are minimums.

GH Archive recorded far fewer star events in 2026 and had collection gaps in October 2025 and August to October 2026. Counts for those periods are understated.

First seen is the first recorded public event. Fork removal is a name-based heuristic.

Frequently asked questions

How many AI article generators are on GitHub?

We counted 14,876 original repos for AI blog, article and content generation first seen from April 2023 to October 20, 2026. 6,093 of them appeared in 2025.

How fast is AI content tooling growing?

New repos averaged 338.7 a quarter in 2023 and 1,982.5 a quarter in the first half of 2026, a 485.4% increase. 2025 had 137.9% more than 2024.

Do these tools publish to WordPress?

Few say so in their name. Only 122 of 14,876 repos (0.8%) name WordPress, while 813 (5.5%) name a social platform. Most do not name a publishing target at all.

What does this mean for my content strategy?

Generic content is getting cheaper to make, so it is likely to carry less weight with search engines and AI assistants. Original details such as your prices, data and local experience are what AI answers can only get from you.
