AEO vs SEO: ranking pages vs becoming the answer
SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank your pages in search results and earn clicks. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to make your content the answer itself, in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI-generated responses. SEO decides whether you are in the running; AEO decides whether your page gets quoted. You need both, and most AEO work happens on pages you are already optimizing for SEO.

AEO vs SEO side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page high in search results | Be the direct answer to a question |
| Typical query | Broad and commercial ("roof repair company") | Question-based ("how much does roof repair cost") |
| Where it shows up | Organic blue links | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers, AI answers |
| Content format | Thorough page covering a topic | Short, self-contained answer plus supporting detail |
| Structure | Headings, internal links, keyword targeting | Question headings, 2-4 sentence answers, lists, tables, FAQs |
| Technical focus | Crawl, index, speed, mobile | Same, plus structured data that matches visible text |
| Success metric | Ranking, clicks, organic traffic | Answer ownership, impressions, mentions in AI answers |
| Click behavior | User clicks through to read | User may get the answer without clicking |
Why AEO exists
Search stopped being only a list of links years ago. Featured snippets and voice assistants started reading out one answer, and AI tools now write full responses that may cite a few sources. When the answer appears on the results page, ranking third is worth less than being the source that gets quoted.
AEO is the response to that shift. It asks a different question from SEO: not "will my page rank?" but "is my page the easiest one for a machine to pull a correct answer from?" Our answer engine optimization guide goes deeper into the history and tactics.
What AEO changes on a page
- Answer first. Open with a 2-4 sentence answer to the main question before any background.
- Question headings. Use headings that match how people phrase questions, then answer each one directly under it.
- Extractable formats. Steps as numbered lists, comparisons as tables, definitions as one clear sentence.
- FAQ sections. Collect the follow-up questions people ask and answer each in a few self-contained sentences.
- Structured data. Google recommends JSON-LD and says structured data gives "explicit clues about the meaning of a page". Keep markup consistent with what is visible on the page.
None of this hurts SEO. Clear structure tends to help both.
Before and after: an answer-first rewrite
Here is a typical SEO-era intro for a page targeting "how often should you service an HVAC system":
Your HVAC system is one of the most important investments in your home. At Example Heating & Air, we have served the community for years and believe in quality service. In this article, we'll explore everything you need to know about HVAC maintenance.
It ranks fine, but a machine has nothing to quote. The AEO version:
Most HVAC systems should be serviced once a year, and heat pumps that run in both summer and winter benefit from twice a year: once before cooling season and once before heating season. A tune-up usually takes about an hour and covers filters, refrigerant levels, electrical connections and drainage.
The second version answers the question, gives specifics, and still leaves room for the rest of the page to explain details. The SEO work, such as the URL, internal links and title tag, stays exactly the same. This is the kind of rewrite our AI search optimization services do across a site's key pages.
What stays the same
AEO does not get around SEO basics. Google states that to show as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search. If a page is not crawlable or indexed, AEO formatting does nothing.
Authority still matters too. Search engines and AI tools prefer sources they already trust, so links, mentions and a solid track record help your answers get picked.
Keyword research does not go away either. It changes shape. Instead of only collecting short keywords, you also collect the full questions people ask, including follow-ups, and plan which page answers each one. Search Console's query data is a good place to find them.
A note on FAQ schema
Many AEO guides tell you to add FAQPage markup to win rich results. Be careful with that advice. In August 2023 Google announced that FAQ rich results would only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and it reduced HowTo rich results at the same time. Google also said the markup does no harm if you leave it in place.
FAQ sections are still worth writing, because they answer real questions in a format machines can read. Just do not expect FAQ markup alone to produce rich results in Google for most sites.
How AEO connects to AI search
AEO is also the bridge to generative engine optimization. The same answer-first passages that win a featured snippet give ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews a clean quote to use. GEO then adds AI crawler access, entity consistency and off-site mentions. We compare those two in AEO vs GEO.
How to run AEO and SEO together
- Find the question-style queries your pages already rank for in Search Console.
- Rewrite the top of each page so the first paragraph answers the main question directly.
- Add question headings and a short FAQ section based on real follow-up questions.
- Add structured data that matches the visible content.
- Check that AI search crawlers can reach the page, then track whether you appear in AI answers.
Our free AI visibility audit checks the technical side, including crawler access, schema and llms.txt, in a couple of minutes. If you want it handled for you, our AEO agency service fixes what the audit finds in month one, then monitors up to 50 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. For the bigger picture, see SEO vs AEO vs GEO or our walkthrough on how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click through. AEO aims to make your content the direct answer shown in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers. AEO relies on SEO, since a page has to be indexed before it can be used as an answer.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO is built on SEO. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that is SEO work.
Does AEO reduce my website traffic?
It can reduce clicks on some simple questions, because the answer appears on the results page. In exchange, your brand is shown as the source, and the visitors who do click are often further along in their decision. Avoiding AEO does not bring those clicks back, since someone else's answer gets shown instead.
Should I still add FAQ schema?
You can, but do not count on FAQ rich results. Google limited them in 2023 to well-known authoritative government and health sites. The FAQ content itself is still useful for readers and for AI tools.
How do I measure AEO?
Track featured snippet and People Also Ask presence for your target questions, and impressions in Search Console. For AI answers, check a fixed set of prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews over time.
What is the fastest AEO win?
Rewrite the opening of your top pages so the first 2-4 sentences answer the main question directly. It is quick, it helps readers, and it gives search engines and AI tools a clean passage to use.
