What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of optimizing a website so AI-powered search tools, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, can find it, understand it and cite it in their answers. It keeps the foundations of traditional SEO and adds a focus on crawler access for AI bots, answer-first content, clear entity data and mentions on other trusted sites. The same phrase is sometimes used for using AI tools to do SEO work.

AI SEO in one sentence
AI SEO is SEO aimed at being the source an AI answer quotes, not only a link in a list of results.
When someone types a question into ChatGPT or sees an AI Overview at the top of Google, the system reads a handful of web pages and writes an answer, often naming brands and linking sources. AI SEO is the work that makes your pages and your brand part of that answer.
The two meanings of AI SEO
| Meaning | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| SEO for AI search | Optimizing so AI engines cite and recommend you | Rewriting a service page so ChatGPT quotes it |
| AI for SEO | Using AI tools to do SEO tasks faster | Using a chatbot to draft meta descriptions |
Most people searching "what is AI SEO" mean the first one, and it is what agencies sell as AI SEO services. The second is a workflow choice, not a channel.
What AI SEO involves
AI SEO work falls into four areas:
- Access. AI crawlers must be able to reach your pages. OpenAI's documentation says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Google's AI features use Googlebot and its normal index.
- Understanding. Schema markup, a clear about page and consistent business details across the web help engines know who you are.
- Content. Pages that answer questions in the first few sentences, with specific facts and named sources, are easier to quote. A 2023 research paper that coined the term generative engine optimization found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
- Reputation. Reviews, directory listings and comparison articles give engines outside evidence that you are worth recommending.
Why AI SEO matters
More searches end with an answer instead of a click. Google said in May 2025 that AI Overviews were available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages. A Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults' browsing found that when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared.
So ranking alone is worth less than it was. If the answer at the top of the page names three of your competitors, a searcher may never scroll to your link. AI SEO is how you get into that answer.
It also matters outside Google. People ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini for recommendations directly, and those tools do not show a list of ten blue links at all. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the conversation.
How AI SEO differs from traditional SEO
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page | Be cited or mentioned in an answer |
| Success looks like | Position 1 to 3, clicks | Your brand named or linked in AI answers |
| Measured with | Rank trackers, Search Console | Prompt monitoring across AI engines |
| Content style | Comprehensive pages | Comprehensive pages with quotable, answer-first passages |
They are not rivals. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Good SEO gets you into the pool; AI SEO improves your odds of being picked. The fuller comparison is in GEO vs SEO.
AI SEO, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO: same thing?
Mostly, yes. These labels describe overlapping work:
- GEO (generative engine optimization) is the research term, from a 2023 paper by Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers. See our generative engine optimization guide.
- AEO (answer engine optimization) grew out of featured snippets and voice search and focuses on being the direct answer.
- LLM SEO stresses large language models specifically. See what is LLM SEO.
- AI SEO is the broad, everyday label for all of it.

A simple example
Say you run a bookkeeping firm in Denver. A prospect asks ChatGPT, "What should I look for in a bookkeeper for a small restaurant?"
Without AI SEO, ChatGPT answers from other sites and names other firms, or none.
With AI SEO in place, OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, you have a page with the heading "What to look for in a restaurant bookkeeper" and a direct answer underneath, your business details are consistent across your site and directories, and you appear in a few local review roundups. You have given the engine a reason and a way to include you. Nothing guarantees a mention, but your odds go up.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI SEO in simple terms?
AI SEO is making your website easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and quote. The aim is for your brand to be mentioned or linked when people ask those tools questions. It builds on normal SEO rather than replacing it.
Is AI SEO the same as using AI to write content?
No, although the phrase is used both ways. Most of the time AI SEO means optimizing for AI search engines. Using AI tools to draft or research content is a separate workflow and can be part of any SEO process.
Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AI engines mostly find pages through search indexes, and Google says its AI features have no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Traditional SEO gets you into the pool, and AI SEO improves your chance of being the source that is quoted.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
They cover largely the same work. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the name used in a 2023 research paper on the topic. AI SEO is the more common everyday term.
Who needs AI SEO?
Any business whose buyers research online before buying, especially services, software and local businesses that get asked for recommendations. If prospects might ask an AI assistant who to hire or what to buy in your category, AI SEO affects whether you are in the answer.
