Of 194,588 top-1M homepages with a top-level Organization in JSON-LD, 4,713 (2.4%) give it more than one name. In 1,275 cases (0.7%) the names share no word at all, and 61.3% of those come from separate markup blocks.

Analysis of 194,588 top-1M homepages with a top-level Organization node in JSON-LD · HTTP Archive, October 2026

Key findings

  1. 1

2.4% of homepages (4,713 of 194,588) declare more than one differently written name across their top-level Organization nodes.

  2. 2

0.7% (1,275) declare names that share no word and neither contains the other, so the page effectively describes two different companies.

  3. 3

61.3% of those conflicts (781 of 1,275) come from organization nodes in separate JSON-LD script blocks, a pattern consistent with more than one SEO plugin, or a theme plus a plugin, each writing their own markup.

  4. 4

On homepages where two or more SEO tools are detected, 5.9% show a conflict (13 of 219), against 0.6% with one tool and 0.7% with none.

  5. 5

Sites ranked 1,001 to 10,000 have the highest conflict rate at 1.8%; sites ranked 100,001 to 1M have 0.6%.

Summary

Picture a boutique fitness studio that installs a new theme with its own schema markup, then adds an SEO plugin that outputs another set. One block names the studio. The other still carries the theme demo's company name. Visitors see one business. Search engines and AI assistants read a page that claims to be published by two.

Organization markup is supposed to state one clear owner for a site. When two top-level Organization nodes carry unrelated names, machines have to decide which one is real, or treat the site as ambiguous.

We looked at 194,588 top-1M homepages with a top-level Organization node. 2.4% give it more than one name, and 0.7% name companies that share no word at all.

What we measured

We parsed the rendered JSON-LD on every top-1M homepage in the October 2026 HTTP Archive mobile crawl, flattened @graph arrays, and kept top-level nodes typed Organization, Corporation, OnlineStore, OnlineBusiness or NewsMediaOrganization that carry a name. Nested organizations, such as a brand inside a Product or a publisher inside an Article, are excluded. LocalBusiness branches are excluded too, since multi-location businesses list each branch.

Names are compared after lowercasing and removing spaces and punctuation. A conflict means two names where neither contains the other and they share no word of four or more characters. We also recorded whether the conflicting nodes sit in different script blocks and how many SEO tools HTTP Archive detects on the page. We report tools as a category and do not name them.

Most pages with two names are variants, a minority are true conflicts

0.7%of homepages name two unrelated organizations at the top level

Variants such as a short name and a full name are common and mostly harmless. Unrelated names are the real problem.

Separate script blocks account for 61.3% of conflicts, which points to more than one source writing markup on the same page.

Stacking SEO tools coincides with more conflicts

5.9%of homepages with two or more SEO tools name unrelated organizations

This group is small, so treat the rate as directional. It is still about nine times the rate on other homepages.

The top 1,000 sample is small (173 homepages), so its rate moves a lot with each site.

What this means

Test your homepage in a schema validator and count the Organization items. If you see more than one, find where each comes from: theme, SEO plugin, review app or custom code. Turn off the duplicate source, keep one Organization node with your real brand name, and give it an @id that other nodes reference.

One clear owner is the simplest signal you can give an AI engine about who a website belongs to. If you want help finding duplicate or conflicting markup, a free AI SEO audit from our team will flag it.

Limits

Homepages only.

The conflict rule is strict: unrelated names that happen to share a common word are not counted, so the true rate may be a little higher.

Tool detection comes from HTTP Archive and can miss SEO tools or themes that output markup.

The two-or-more-tools group has 219 homepages, too few for firm conclusions.

Correlation only: having two tools coincides with more conflicts, but this data cannot show which tool wrote which node.
