10.3% of Homepages Give Their Organization a Name in Markup That Shares Nothing With Their Domain
Of 213,331 top-1M homepages with a Latin-script organization name in JSON-LD, 22,018 (10.3%) use names that do not match the domain by spelling, shared word or initials. 1,346 still carry placeholder text such as "My Blog" or "Company Name".
Analysis of 213,331 top-1M homepages with a named Organization in JSON-LD · HTTP Archive, October 2026
Key findings
- 1
10.3% of homepages (22,018 of 213,331) name their organization in markup with words that match neither the domain, a word in it, nor its initials.
- 2
1,346 homepages (0.6%) carry a placeholder or default organization name such as "My Blog", "Company Name" or "admin".
- 3
Of the mismatches, 11.2% use a legal or parent company name (with Inc, Ltd, GmbH, Group and similar) and 4.5% only name an organization that also appears on 25 or more unrelated domains, typically a third-party widget or network name.
- 4
The mismatch rate barely moves with rank: 11.7% in the top 1,000 and 10.3% among sites ranked 100,001 to 1M.
- 5
By platform, 2.9% of Shopify homepages and 11.1% of WordPress homepages show a mismatch.
Summary
Picture a plumbing company called Rivera & Sons that runs its website at riverasons.com. Years ago a developer set up the schema markup and typed in the old trading name, "RS Home Services LLC". Customers never see it. Search engines and AI assistants do, and now they have two names to reconcile.
The name in your Organization markup is one of the clearest statements a site makes about who owns it. When it lines up with the domain and the visible brand, machines can connect them with little effort. When it does not, they have to work out whether the names refer to one business or two.
We compared the markup name with the domain on 213,331 top-1M homepages. 10.3% share nothing recognizable with their domain.
What we measured
From the October 2026 HTTP Archive mobile crawl we parsed the rendered JSON-LD on every top-1M homepage, flattened nested objects and @graph arrays, and collected the names of all Organization-type nodes. We kept homepages with at least one name in Latin letters, since our comparison works on ASCII domain labels.
A homepage matches if any organization name, stripped to letters and digits, contains the main domain label or is contained in it, or shares a word of four or more letters with it, or its initials spell the label. Everything else is a mismatch. We then grouped mismatches into placeholder text, names that also appear on 25 or more other domains, legal or parent company names, and other differing names.
One homepage in ten uses a name machines can't tie to the domain
Most mismatches are likely not mistakes in the strict sense. Many are different names for the same business, which still leaves machines to make the connection.

"Other differing name" includes abbreviations, older trading names, local-language brand names and brand names that differ from a short or keyword domain.
Rank makes almost no difference
Large sites are as likely as small ones to name a different entity than their domain suggests.

The name in markup is set by the site owner or whoever configured the theme or app, on every platform listed.
What this means
Check the name field in your Organization or LocalBusiness markup. It should be the brand customers know, written the way your logo and page titles write it. Put a legal entity name in legalName and an older or alternate name in alternateName. Replace any placeholder text left over from setup. A mismatched name splits your AI brand visibility between two entities that should be one.
AI assistants build their answer about a business by matching names across many sources. Make yours easy to match. Request a free AI visibility audit to see which names assistants currently associate with your site.
Limits
Our match rule is a heuristic. Abbreviations it cannot detect, such as a university's short name, count as mismatches; some loose word matches count as matches.
Homepages whose organization names use only non-Latin scripts are excluded because domain labels are ASCII.
We count names from all Organization-type nodes, so a site can match on its own name even if another node names a partner or widget provider.
Gambling, adult and spam sites are included in aggregate counts and are not named.

Frequently asked questions
Does the organization name in schema need to match the domain?
Not exactly, but it should be the brand people know and should be easy to connect to the site. Use legalName and alternateName for other names. In our data 10.3% of homepages use a name with no visible link to the domain.
How many sites still have placeholder names in their schema?
1,346 of 213,331 top-1M homepages with a named Organization (0.6%) use placeholder or default text such as "My Blog", "Company Name" or "admin".
Are big sites better at this?
No. 11.7% of top-1,000 homepages show a mismatch, close to the 10.3% seen among sites ranked 100,001 to 1M.
What causes a name mismatch?
Among mismatches, 11.2% use a legal or parent company name, 4.3% are placeholder text and 4.5% only name an organization that also appears across many unrelated domains, such as a widget provider.
