Summary

Picture a procurement manager vetting a new supplier. In the past she might have read the company's Wikipedia page, its website and a few news stories. Now she asks an AI assistant for a summary of the company, its size and any recent problems, and reads what it says.

We tracked Wikipedia articles for 397 Fortune 500 companies. The median company page lost 20.3% of its readers between 2022 and the past 12 months, a smaller drop than for general explainers but still a clear decline.

Company pages behave differently from topic pages because news drives them. One in five companies gained readers, usually on the back of big business stories such as the AI chip boom, a major drug launch or a deal. The retail sector, by contrast, had just one gainer out of 39.

What we measured

We built a list of Fortune 500 company article titles, grouped them into 11 sectors and summed desktop and mobile web views for calendar year 2022 and for October 2025 to September 2026.

We excluded titles with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way, which usually means a company or page was renamed. When listing gainers, we also left out pages whose name changed during the period. Per the study's scope, declines are shown by sector, not by company.

Desktop is where analysts, job seekers and B2B buyers look up companies during the workday, and it is the side that fell most. Total views fell 34.7%, more than the median, because several very large pages lost heavily.

What this means

Brand research is moving into AI answers. When a buyer, partner or job candidate asks an AI assistant about a company, the summary they get may be the only description they read. For smaller companies, most of which have no Wikipedia page at all, that answer is built from whatever the AI can find on the web. For those companies, SEO for AI search mostly means making the web's description of them accurate and easy to find.

Check what AI tools say about your business: what you do, how big you are, where you operate, and whether old or wrong facts are repeated. Fixing the sources they rely on is the work. A free AI visibility audit is a simple way to start, and it shows which of those sources our AI search optimization services would fix first.

Limits

Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.

We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.

Our list is built from the Fortune 500 and matched to Wikipedia titles by hand; a few companies share pages with parent brands.

Company page views are heavily driven by news such as earnings, scandals, deals and stock moves.

Some company pages were renamed or merged after mergers; those are excluded or not named.
