AI Browser Agents Went From 1.2% to 22.7% of Python Browser Automation Downloads Between Q3 2025 and Q3 2026

KGWritten by Kriszta GrenyoPublished October 20265 min read

Downloads of the leading AI browser agent package rose 53.9x in a year to 29,563,086 in the Q3 2026 sample days, while classic browser automation tools grew 2.2x. The surge was concentrated in June to August; in the September sample week the agent share fell back to 5.8%.

Analysis of 130,004,081 browser automation downloads in the Q3 2026 sample days, plus quarterly trends from Jan 2022 · PyPI public download logs via BigQuery, October 2026

Key findings

  1. 1

AI browser agent downloads grew 53.9x year over year, from 548,850 in the Q3 2025 sample days to 29,563,086 in Q3 2026.

  2. 2

Their share of all browser automation downloads rose from 1.2% to 22.7% over the same period.

  3. 3

    Classic browser automation tools grew 9.0x since Q3 2022 (11,161,178 to 100,440,995), close to PyPI's overall 9.5x.

  4. 4

The agent surge was uneven: the share peaked at 30.1% in the July 2026 sample week and was 5.8% in the September week.

  5. 5

46.6% of classic browser automation downloads were CI-flagged in Q3 2026, against 5.9% for the AI browser agent category, reflecting heavy use of classic tools in software testing.

  6. 6

76.9% of AI browser agent downloads came through the uv installer in Q3 2026.

Summary

Picture a customer who asks an AI assistant to book a table at a restaurant. Instead of reading a text copy of the page, the agent opens a real browser, waits for the booking widget to load, and clicks through it the way a person would.

Tools like this are called browser agents. In Python they sit on top of the same browser automation libraries that testers have used for years, such as Playwright and Selenium. We used PyPI download logs to see how quickly the AI agent layer is growing compared with classic automation.

In the Q3 2026 sample days, the leading AI browser agent package was downloaded 29,563,086 times, 53.9 times as often as a year before. That lifted AI agents from 1.2% to 22.7% of all Python browser automation downloads, although the share swung widely from month to month.

What we measured

We queried the public PyPI download log in Google BigQuery (bigquery-public-data.pypi.file_downloads), which records one row for every file downloaded from the Python Package Index. To keep the query affordable we sampled the first seven days of every month from January 2022 through September 2026, 399 days in total, and summed downloads by month, package, country, CI flag, installer and weekday versus weekend into one working table. A quarter in this study therefore means 21 sampled days (days 1 to 7 of each of its three months), not a full quarter. We removed downloads made by mirroring and proxy tools (bandersnatch, Nexus, Artifactory, devpi), which copy packages in bulk rather than install them. To control for the growth of PyPI itself we also pulled total daily download counts for the whole index from the table's partition metadata for the same sampled days.

Classic browser automation covers six packages (playwright, selenium, pyppeteer, undetected-chromedriver, nodriver, splinter). The AI browser agent category is one package, browser-use, the only agent-focused browser package in our list with meaningful download volume. Classic tools are used heavily for automated website testing, so their counts include a large amount of non-AI work.

Most of the jump came in Q2 and Q3 2026. Classic tools kept growing too, from 44,907,103 to 100,440,995, so the agents' gain did not come from a drop in classic automation.

Weekly AI agent downloads went from 2,533,248 in May to 10,982,752 in June, stayed between 10,982,752 and 14,387,613 a week through August, then dropped to 1,671,987 in September. PyPI as a whole fell 38.1% between the August and September sample weeks, but this drop was far larger, which suggests a small number of high-volume automated users drove much of the summer peak. The September level was still 5.3x September 2025.

Nearly half of classic downloads happen in test pipelines, which fits their long use for checking websites before release. The AI agent category shows far fewer CI flags and far more uv installs, a pattern that fits agents being set up in containers and sandboxes to do work. By package, Playwright led classic downloads with 64,515,755 and Selenium followed with 33,410,649.

What this means

Browser agents see your site the way a customer's browser does. They load scripts, wait for widgets and try to click buttons. Pop-ups that cover the page, booking or quote forms that break without a mouse, and buttons with vague labels like "Click here" make it harder for an agent to finish a task for a customer. Clear button text, forms that work with a keyboard and pages that load fast help people and agents alike. An AI search optimization agency should test these flows as part of any site review.

As more customers hand tasks to AI agents, the businesses whose sites are easy to use are more likely to get the booking. How AI assistants describe and reach your business is what a free AI visibility audit checks, the opening step of LLM SEO for a site that agents will use.

Limits

A download is not a user. One developer, one Docker build or one CI job can download the same package many times, and a single busy pipeline can move a package's numbers sharply from month to month.

Figures cover the first seven days of each month only (21 days per quarter), so they are sample totals, not full-month or full-quarter totals. Growth rates compare like-for-like sample periods.

PyPI as a whole grew from 12.1 billion downloads in the Q3 2022 sample days to 115.0 billion in the Q3 2026 sample days (9.5x), so part of every package's growth is the index growing. We report share of all PyPI downloads where it matters.

PyPI-wide downloads in the September 2026 sample week were 38.1% lower than in the August 2026 sample week (28.7 billion vs 46.4 billion), so September figures for individual packages should be read with that drop in mind.

The CI flag is only populated in this dataset from March 2024, and it only catches environments that announce themselves as CI. Automated downloads that do not set a CI variable are counted as non-CI.

Country codes come from the downloading IP address. Cloud servers sit mostly in the United States, so country splits describe where machines run, not where developers live.

The AI browser agent category is a single package, so its trend reflects that project's installs, including any large automated users.

Classic browser automation packages are used mainly for website testing and general automation, not only for AI.

Agent share swung from 1.6% to 30.1% across the last 13 sample weeks; treat quarterly shares as rough.

Frequently asked questions

How fast are AI browser agents growing?

Downloads of the leading AI browser agent package rose from 548,850 in the Q3 2025 sample days to 29,563,086 in Q3 2026, a 53.9x jump. Classic browser automation grew 2.2x in the same year.

What share of browser automation is now AI agents?

22.7% of Python browser automation downloads in Q3 2026, up from 1.2% a year earlier. In the September 2026 sample week alone, the share was 5.8%.

Do AI browser agents run JavaScript?

Yes. They drive a real browser, so they see pages after scripts run, the same way a customer does. That also means slow scripts and broken widgets affect them.

How can a business make its site agent-friendly?

Use clear button labels, avoid pop-ups that block content, keep forms simple and keyboard-friendly, and keep pages fast. These changes help human visitors too.
