AI SEO: how to get found in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews
AI SEO is the practice of optimizing your website so AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can find, understand and cite it in their answers. It builds on traditional SEO, because most AI engines still retrieve pages from a search index, and adds work on crawler access, answer-first content, entity data and brand mentions. The term is also used for using AI tools to do SEO work, which this guide covers briefly at the end.

What AI SEO covers
People use "AI SEO" for two different things:
- SEO for AI search. Getting your brand cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers. This is the main subject of this guide, and it is the same territory as generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization.
- AI for SEO. Using AI tools to research keywords, draft content or audit sites. Useful, but a different job.
In the first sense, AI SEO spans four layers:
| Layer | What it means | Example tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Access | AI crawlers can reach and read your pages | robots.txt rules, firewall settings, server-rendered HTML |
| Understanding | Engines know who you are and what each page covers | Schema, entity data, consistent business info |
| Content | Your pages are easy to quote | Answer-first copy, question headings, sourced facts, FAQs |
| Reputation | Other sites vouch for you | Reviews, directories, comparison lists, press |
If you want the short definition and nothing else, read what is AI SEO.
How AI search engines find and cite content
Each engine has its own pipeline, but they share a pattern: retrieve pages, read passages, write an answer, link some sources.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google's normal index. Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that there are "no additional requirements" beyond that. Both features may run several related searches, which Google calls query fan-out, to gather supporting pages for subtopics.
ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's crawlers. OpenAI's documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that decides whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is separate and relates to model training. ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT to visit them.
Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in its results and is not used to crawl content for training foundation models.
The practical point: you can block training bots and still be visible in AI search, as long as you allow the search bots. Many sites get this wrong.
AI SEO vs traditional SEO
Most of SEO still applies. What changes is where the result shows up and how you measure it.
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A ranked list of links | Inside a written answer |
| What wins | The most relevant, authoritative page | The clearest, most quotable passage from a trusted source |
| Who reads first | A person scanning results | A model pulling passages |
| Measurement | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Mentions, citations, share of answers across prompts |
| Off-site signals | Backlinks | Backlinks plus mentions in reviews, lists and forums |
The overlap is large. Google's May 2025 guidance for its AI experiences lists familiar advice: unique content, good page experience, crawlable pages, accurate structured data and good images and video. For a deeper comparison, read GEO vs SEO.
An AI SEO strategy in eight steps
1. Audit AI crawler access. Check robots.txt for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Then check your CDN and security plugins, which can block them silently. Our free AI visibility checker does this for you.
2. Make content readable as HTML. If your text only appears after JavaScript runs, some crawlers will see nothing.
3. Rewrite key pages answer-first. Question as the heading, two to four sentence answer immediately under it, detail after. Keep each answer self-contained so it can be lifted out.
4. Add specifics and sources. The 2023 GEO research paper by Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did little. Name the source in your copy and link it.
5. Fix your entity data. Organization schema, a clear "about" page, and the same name, description and category on your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
6. Add schema that matches the page. Product, Service, Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness where relevant. Google says structured data should match visible content and that no special AI schema is needed.
7. Earn third-party mentions. Get reviewed, get listed in industry directories, and get included in honest comparison articles. AI answers often draw on these.
8. Track prompts monthly. 20 to 50 buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews, recording mentions, citations and competitors.
The step-by-step version lives in how to optimize for AI search.
What to skip
AI SEO attracts a lot of noise. Some things that do not deserve your time:
- Keyword stuffing for AI. The GEO paper tested it and found little to no improvement.
- "AI-only" pages written for bots. Google's guidance is to write for people. Thin pages built to game AI rarely get cited.
- Special AI markup. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or special schema to appear in its AI features.
- Treating llms.txt as a ranking factor. llms.txt is a September 2024 proposal for a Markdown site map aimed at AI agents. It is cheap to add and some tools read it, but Google says it is not needed. Add one with our llms.txt generator and move on.
- Judging success on one prompt run. AI answers vary. Track trends.
How to measure AI SEO
Google Search Console counts AI Overview and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type of the Performance report, but does not separate it. Other engines have no console at all. So measurement comes down to two things:
- Prompt monitoring. Run the same questions on a schedule and record mentions, citations, position and competitors. Mentions divided by prompts gives you a share you can track.
- Referral traffic. Analytics will show visits from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. It undercounts, because many people read the answer and never click.
Expect fewer clicks per impression than classic search. A Pew Research Center study found Google users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. Google says the clicks that do come are higher quality. Judge AI SEO on mentions, leads and conversions, not raw sessions.

AI SEO for local businesses
Local businesses are in a different spot from software companies or publishers. Buyers ask AI assistants things like "who is a good emergency plumber near me" or "best family dentist in [town]", and the answer usually names a few businesses.
What matters most for those prompts:
- Google Business Profile. Google's May 2025 guidance for its AI experiences says to keep Business Profile information up to date. Hours, categories, services and photos all count.
- Consistent listings. Your name, address, phone and description should match across your site, your Business Profile and the directories in your area and trade.
- Reviews. AI answers that recommend local businesses tend to reflect what reviews say. Ask happy customers to leave them, and reply to the critical ones.
- Location pages with real content. One page per area you serve, with the services you actually offer there, not a template with the town name swapped.
- Plain answers on your site. Prices or price ranges, service area, emergency availability, licensing. If a buyer would ask it, answer it on the page.
Local AI SEO is often the quickest win because the fixes are concrete and competitors rarely do them.
A 30-day AI SEO starter plan
If you want to start this month, here is a realistic order for a small team.
| Week | Focus | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline and access | Run the free audit, write 20 buyer prompts and record current results, fix robots.txt and firewall blocks |
| 2 | Entity and schema | Organization schema, about page, Business Profile and top directory listings brought into line |
| 3 | Content | Rewrite your five most important pages answer-first with question headings and FAQs |
| 4 | Gaps and reputation | Publish one comparison or "best for" page your prompts showed you missing; request reviews; publish llms.txt |
Then rerun the same 20 prompts and compare. Repeat monthly, picking the next set of gaps each time.
Do not expect the whole picture to change in 30 days. Crawler fixes register quickly; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search bot take about 24 hours. Rewritten pages need recrawling, and reviews and mentions build over months. The first month is about removing blockers and setting a baseline you can measure against.
Using AI tools for SEO
The other meaning of AI SEO is using AI to speed up SEO work. It is good at:
- Grouping keywords by intent
- Drafting outlines and first drafts for a human to edit
- Writing title tags and meta descriptions at scale
- Summarizing crawl and audit reports
It is bad at original insight, first-hand experience and accurate facts without checking. Google's guidance rewards unique, people-first content, so AI drafts need a human who adds what the model cannot.
Doing AI SEO in-house vs hiring an AI SEO agency
A small team can do everything here. The challenge is time: technical fixes, page rewrites, entity cleanup and monthly prompt tracking add up, and the work is easy to drop.
We are an AI SEO agency with one flat plan at $299 a month. Month one fixes what the free audit finds: AI crawler access, schema, llms.txt, entity data and content gaps. After that we keep optimizing and monitor up to 50 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Sites over 500 pages get a custom quote. Run the free audit and see what our AI search optimization services would change on your site.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is optimizing your website so AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can find, understand and cite it. It builds on traditional SEO and adds work on AI crawler access, answer-first content, entity data and third-party mentions. The term is also used for using AI tools to do SEO tasks.
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
It overlaps heavily, because AI engines mostly retrieve pages through search indexes. The difference is the goal and the measurement: AI SEO aims for mentions and citations inside answers and tracks them with prompt monitoring. It also puts more weight on quotable passages and brand mentions on other sites.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO and AEO?
They describe largely the same work. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the research term from a 2023 paper, and AEO (answer engine optimization) grew out of featured snippets and voice search. AI SEO is the broader, more common label for all of it.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Block training crawlers if you want, but allow search crawlers if you want to appear in AI answers. OpenAI separates GPTBot (training) from OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), and Perplexity says PerplexityBot is for search results, not model training. Blocking the search bots removes you from those engines.
Does AI SEO still need backlinks?
Yes. Links help pages get crawled, indexed and ranked, which is how most AI engines find candidates to cite. AI answers also lean on unlinked brand mentions in reviews, directories and comparison articles, so mentions matter more than they did for classic SEO.
How do I know if AI SEO is working?
Track a fixed list of buyer prompts across the main AI engines every month and record mentions, citations and competitors. Add referral traffic from AI domains in your analytics. Look for a rising share of answers over a quarter, not changes on single runs.
How much does AI SEO cost?
Doing it yourself costs time plus any monitoring tool you choose. Agency pricing varies widely by scope. Our plan is a flat $299 a month with a three-month minimum, or $2,990 a year, with custom quotes for sites over 500 pages.
