Analysis of 208 travel destination articles on English Wikipedia, spring planning seasons 2022 to 2026 · Wikimedia pageviews via BigQuery, October 2026

Key findings

  1. 1

Destination articles averaged 12.77 million views per month in March to June 2026, 25.6% below the 17.17 million monthly average in March to June 2022.

  2. 2

In 2022, spring months drew 1.04 times the views of the preceding October to February. In 2026 they drew 0.91 times, so the spring planning bump became a dip.

  3. 3

International and US destinations lost almost the same share of spring readers: 25.9% and 25.0%.

  4. 4

Beach and island destinations lost 25.7% of spring readers and city destinations 25.6%, but beach spots lost more of their seasonality, with the spring ratio falling from 1.08 to 0.93.

  5. 5

Over the full year, the 208 destination pages fell 26.9%, from 218.7 million views in 2022 to 159.9 million in the past 12 months; desktop views fell 35.8% and mobile web 20.0%.

Summary

Picture a boutique hotel owner in Charleston who used to see bookings climb every spring, after families spent February and March reading about where to go. Lately the planning seems to happen faster, and fewer guests mention finding the town through travel articles. Perhaps many of them asked an AI trip planner instead.

We tracked 208 Wikipedia articles on popular travel destinations, from Paris and Tokyo to Key West and Cancun, and measured the spring planning season each year. In March to June 2026, these pages averaged 25.6% fewer monthly views than in the same months of 2022.

The seasonal shape changed too. In 2022, spring was busier than the winter before it. In 2026 it was quieter. The research stage that used to swell before summer trips may be moving into AI tools.

What we measured

We built a seed list of popular international and US destinations, tagged each as a city or a beach and island destination, and matched them to English Wikipedia titles. We summed desktop and mobile web views by month.

For each year we compared the average monthly views from March to June with the average for the preceding October to February. We also compared full-year 2022 with October 2025 to September 2026. Titles with fewer than 1,000 views in 2022 or a change of more than 20 times either way were excluded.

The drop is strikingly even across types. Beach and island destinations had the strongest spring bump in 2022, and lost all of it.

Only 11 of 208 destination pages (5.3%) gained readers over the full year. Gains were mostly tied to news or events. Desktop views fell 35.8% while mobile web fell 20.0%, which may suggest that sit-down trip research is what moved most.

What this means

Hotels, tour operators, vacation rentals and local attractions have relied on travelers reading up on a destination before choosing where to stay and what to do. More of that early research is now done in AI trip planners that suggest an itinerary in seconds. If you are not named in those suggestions, you may not be considered. Much of what AI SEO services do for hospitality is getting a property into those suggestions with accurate details.

Make your listings and site easy for AI tools to use: what you offer, where you are, prices, seasons, and what makes you different from the place down the street. Encourage reviews on the platforms AI reads. Ask an AI to plan a trip to your area and see if you come up; our free AI visibility audit runs that test across many prompts as the starting point for AI search optimization.

Limits

Wikimedia pageview counts include some automated traffic that its filters do not catch, and Wikimedia changed how it detects bots in 2025, which lowers counted views from that point on. Some of the change in any period may reflect better bot filtering rather than fewer human readers.

We count views of titles that had at least 5 views in a given month on a given site, which drops a very small tail of rarely read pages.

The seed list was built by hand and focuses on destinations popular with US and English-speaking travelers.

Several Hawaiian island articles were retitled during the period to include the okina, which splits their views across two titles and overstates their decline; we do not name them.

Travel demand changes with prices, exchange rates and events, independent of AI.
