Key findings

  1. 1

From January 2023 to September 2026, 45.4% of Hacker News search engine threads had at least one comment naming an AI answer engine (221 of 487).

  2. 2

The share peaked in 2023 at 53.2% (83 of 156 threads) and eased to 35.5% in the first nine months of 2026 (22 of 62).

  3. 3

Traditional alternative search engines still came up more often, in 72.1% of threads since 2023 (351 of 487).

  4. 4

At the comment level, traditional alternatives were named 8,327 times in these threads since 2023, 5.8 times the 1,438 comments naming an AI answer engine.

  5. 5

In 191 threads since 2023 (39.2%), commenters named both kinds, comparing AI assistants and other search engines side by side.

  6. 6

The busiest month for AI in search threads was May 2024, when 14 of 19 search engine threads (73.7%) brought up an AI answer engine.

Summary

Think of a thread where people argue about which search engine is best, or why results seem worse than they used to. Before 2023, the replies named other search engines. Now, in almost half of these threads, someone brings up an AI assistant as an option too.

We followed every Hacker News thread about search engines since 2019, leaving out stories that were already about AI. From 2023 onward, 45.4% of them had at least one comment naming an AI answer engine.

AI has joined the search conversation without taking it over. Traditional alternatives still come up in more threads and far more comments, and the share of threads mentioning AI has drifted down since its 2023 peak.

What we measured

We used the public Hacker News table on Google BigQuery and kept stories from January 2019 to September 2026 with at least 5 comments whose titles mention search engines, web search, search results, search quality, the search market or a named search engine. We left out titles that mention AI, chatbots or AI assistants, so the threads are general search debates. That gave 1,079 threads.

For each thread we checked its comments for any AI answer engine (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and similar, counted from December 2022) and any traditional alternative search engine. We report both at the category level. Comments are those in our working extract, which keeps comments mentioning search, AI or related terms; that covers the comments that could name either category.

Almost half of search debates now bring up AI

45.4%of search engine threads since 2023 had a comment naming an AI answer engine (221 of 487)

Before December 2022 this share was zero by definition, since AI answer engines did not exist. They entered the conversation immediately.

The AI share was 53.2% in 2023, 42.7% in 2024, 43.9% in 2025 and 35.5% in 2026. Traditional alternatives stayed between 64.9% and 81.4% of threads every year.

Traditional alternatives still get far more mentions

5.8xmore comments named a traditional alternative than an AI answer engine in search threads since 2023 (8,327 vs 1,438)

A thread can mention AI once and spend the rest of the discussion on other search engines. Counting comments shows the balance inside the threads.

AI answer engine comments made up 3.4% of comments in these threads in 2023 (507 of 14,731) and 5.4% in 2025 (467 of 8,569). The number of search engine threads also fell, from 212 in 2022 to 98 in 2025.

Spike months followed big AI search moments

73.7%of search engine threads in May 2024 named an AI answer engine (14 of 19)

Monthly shares are noisy because there are only 5 to 25 search threads a month, but a few months stand out.

May 2024 coincides with AI-generated answers rolling out at the top of a major search engine's results. The early 2023 months coincide with chatbots first appearing inside search.

What this means

When people debate where to search, AI assistants are now part of the shortlist about half the time, but they sit beside search engines rather than replacing them. Your customers are likely to use both. Being findable in search results and being described correctly by AI assistants are now two parts of the same job. Good AI search optimization services report on both, side by side.

A free AI visibility audit adds the AI half to what you already know about search, and our answer engine optimization services work on both halves together.

Limits

Threads were chosen by title keywords and need at least 5 comments; some search debates use other wording.

A thread counts as naming AI if any comment does, even briefly.

Name flags can catch unrelated uses (for example Copilot as a coding tool); AI names are only counted from December 2022.

This reports discussion only and makes no claims about markets or legal matters.

2026 covers January to September only.
