Summary

Picture a marketing lead pitching a webinar on AI search who assumes the topic will light up any audience. On Hacker News, where tech professionals argue about everything, the picture is more uneven than that.

We tracked 3,370 stories about AI search posted since January 2023 and compared their comment counts with every story posted in the same months. The average AI search story drew 9.7 comments, slightly below the 10.8-comment site average.

The conversation is concentrated. Ten threads, mostly product launches and controversies, account for 24.2% of all comments on the topic. The rest is a long tail of news reposts and tool launches that few people discuss.

What we measured

We used the public Hacker News table on Google BigQuery and kept live stories from January 2023 to September 2026. A story counted as AI search if its title named an AI answer product or feature (such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, SearchGPT, Perplexity, Bing Chat, Phind or You.com) or paired search, a search engine or SEO with an AI term. We excluded developer topics such as vector search and retrieval. A check of 60 random matches found about 52 clearly on topic (about 87%).

Comment counts are the descendants recorded at the October 2026 refresh. Each story was compared with the average for all live stories posted in the same calendar month, so busy and quiet months are handled fairly.

A few huge threads carry the topic

24.2%of all AI search comments came from just 10 threads (7,924 of 32,782)

The biggest AI search threads were launch days and turning points. When a major company shipped AI search, thousands of people weighed in.

Four of the ten were product launches or announcements from 2023 and 2024. Most of the more recent ones were about effects and disputes: falling search clicks, crawler behavior and legal responsibility for AI answers.

AI search stories get noticed and usually draw a reply or two, slightly more often than average. They less often turn into long debates unless the news is big.

What this means

AI search is no longer a novelty for tech audiences. Big launches and real consequences, like lost clicks or wrong answers about real people, still draw huge discussion. Routine AI search news does not. If you want attention, bring evidence about effects on real businesses rather than another feature roundup.

The same goes for your own visibility. What matters is how AI answers actually describe your business, not the hype around them. A free AI visibility audit shows you that in concrete terms, with the actual answers, so you can judge any AEO agency pitch against real results.

Limits

Stories were matched on title keywords; a 60-title check found about 87% clearly about AI search.

Comment counts include all replies recorded at the October 2026 refresh. Recent stories may still have been gaining a few comments.

Top-thread topics are paraphrased by our team and do not quote the original titles.

Hacker News is a developer and founder audience, so this reflects technical interest, not public interest.

2026 covers January to September only.
