ChatGPT Was Named in 86% of Developer 'AI Replaced My Search' Comments in 2023 and 36% in 2026
We verified 198 Hacker News comments where people said they now use AI in place of a search engine. ChatGPT dominated those comments in 2023. By 2026 other assistants and plain mentions of 'AI' had taken most of the share.
Analysis of 198 verified Hacker News comments, December 2022 to September 2026, screened from 27.3 million live comments posted since January 2019 · Hacker News public dataset on Google BigQuery, October 2026
Key findings
- 1
Our team confirmed 198 Hacker News comments, from December 2022 to September 2026, where someone said they or people close to them now use an AI assistant instead of a search engine. We found none before ChatGPT launched.
- 2
ChatGPT was named in 66.7% of those comments overall (132 of 198), but its share fell from 86.0% in 2023 (43 of 50) to 36.4% in 2026 (12 of 33).
- 3
In 2026, Claude was named in 13 of 33 switch comments (39.4%), slightly more than ChatGPT, after appearing in none in 2023.
- 4
Comments that only said 'AI' or 'an LLM' without naming a product rose from 0 of 50 in 2023 to 12 of 33 in 2026 (36.4%).
- 5
The rate of these statements peaked in 2025 at 1.76 per 100,000 comments (60 of 3,399,696), then fell to 1.13 per 100,000 in the first nine months of 2026.
- 6
Even at the peak, switch statements made up 0.45% of comments that discussed search engines or search results (60 of 13,284).
Summary
Think of an IT consultant who used to type every error message into a search bar. Somewhere in 2023 they started pasting it into a chat window instead, and at some point they mentioned it in a forum thread. We went looking for those moments on Hacker News, where developers talk shop every day.
Our team read every candidate comment and confirmed 198 where someone said an AI assistant had replaced some or most of their searching. In 2023, 86.0% of those comments named ChatGPT. By 2026 that share was 36.4%, with Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and generic 'AI' references splitting the rest.
The switch itself may have become ordinary. Statements of it peaked in 2025 and dropped in 2026, possibly because the habit is no longer news among technical users.
What we measured
We screened every live Hacker News comment posted from January 2019 to September 2026 in the public BigQuery dataset. A candidate needed a sentence that combined an AI tool or term with a switching phrase, such as using AI instead of searching, AI replacing search for the writer, or AI becoming their default for questions. That produced 421 candidates.
Our team read all 421 and kept only comments where the writer, or a named person close to them such as a colleague or parent, actually used AI in place of search. Predictions, hypotheticals, opinions about the market and quotes of other commenters were removed, leaving 198. Product names were counted if they appeared anywhere in the confirmed comment. Rates use all live comments for each year as the base.
ChatGPT went from nearly every switch story to about a third
Early on, switching to AI for answers meant switching to ChatGPT. All 7 confirmed comments from December 2022 named it, and 43 of 50 did in 2023.

By 2026 the mix looked very different. Claude appeared in 13 comments, ChatGPT in 12 and Gemini in 6. A comment can name more than one assistant, so columns do not add up to the total.
The rise of comments that name no product at all is the other shift. People increasingly wrote that they 'just ask AI', the way an earlier generation said they would 'just google it'.
Switch statements peaked in 2025
We normalized by total comment volume, which fell after 2023, so the trend does not simply reflect a busier or quieter site.

The rate rose from 1.21 per 100,000 in 2023 to 1.47 in 2024 and 1.76 in 2025, then fell to 1.13 in 2026. We screened 2019 to 2021 the same way and found 7 candidates, none of which described a real switch.
Most search talk on Hacker News is still about search itself
We also compared the confirmed statements with every comment that discussed search engines, search results or search quality.

Explicit switch stories stay rare even among technical users who talk about search a lot. Hacker News commenters argue about search far more often than they announce they have left it. That makes each confirmed statement a strong signal rather than a casual mention.
What this means
The early lead belonged to one assistant, and two years later attention is spread across several. Customers who skip the search bar may ask any of them, so being visible in only one is a narrow bet. Check what each of the main assistants says about your business and its prices, including the ones you never use yourself. An AI SEO agency that reports on only one assistant is giving you part of the picture.
Technical users tend to adopt habits a year or two ahead of everyone else. A free AI visibility audit shows how your business appears across these assistants today, so ChatGPT SEO does not become your only plan.
Limits
These are confirmed public statements, not a count of how many people use AI instead of search. Most people who switch never post about it.
Phrase rules find specific wordings. Switch statements phrased in other ways were missed, so all counts are a floor.
Product names were counted anywhere in a confirmed comment, which can include passing mentions. Copilot includes the older Bing Chat name.
Dead and deleted comments carry no text in the dataset and are excluded. 2026 covers January to September only, and 2022 covers December only.
Hacker News readers are mostly developers and founders, so the pattern describes technical early adopters.

Frequently asked questions
How often do developers say AI replaced their searches?
Rarely in public. We confirmed 198 such comments on Hacker News between December 2022 and September 2026. The peak year was 2025 with 60 confirmed comments, or 1.76 per 100,000 comments.
Which AI assistant do people name when they say it replaced search?
ChatGPT appeared in 132 of the 198 confirmed comments (66.7%). Its share dropped from 86.0% in 2023 to 36.4% in 2026, while Claude appeared in 13 of 33 comments in 2026 (39.4%).
Did anyone on Hacker News say this before ChatGPT?
We screened 2019 to 2021 with the same rules and found 7 candidate comments. None described someone actually using an AI tool in place of a search engine.
Why did the number of switch statements fall in 2026?
The rate fell from 1.76 per 100,000 comments in 2025 to 1.13 in 2026. The data cannot show why. One possible reason is that the habit has become common enough that people mention it less as news.
