Summary
Picture a dentist's office getting a call from a patient who says an AI assistant recommended them and linked to their page on implants. That link is a citation, and it is the most direct way AI answers send people to a business.
We checked which generative AI search patent families describe citing or linking to sources. 88 of 2,269 do, or 3.9%. The share has held between 3.5% and 4.4% each year since 2024, while the total number of filings grew fast.
Most of these families have a US publication, and Microsoft is the largest single owner. A patent shows what was filed, not what is live in any product.
What we measured
We pulled every publication in Google Patents Public Data (patents-public-data.patents.publications) published from January 1, 2018 to September 17, 2026 that carries at least one CPC code in G06F16 (information retrieval), G06F40 (natural language processing) or G06N (AI and machine learning) and has an English abstract. That is 2,170,848 publications in 1,214,491 patent families. For each publication we kept the English title, the English abstract and up to the first 20,000 characters of the English claims. English claims exist for 488,406 publications, mostly US, European and international (WO) filings, so text matching is deeper for those offices than for Chinese, Korean or Japanese filings, which we matched on title and abstract.
Within the 2,269 families that describe both generative AI and search, we flagged those whose title, abstract or claims use cite, cited, citing or citation, describe links to a source document or web page, source links or URLs, source attribution, provenance or footnotes. We also flagged mentions of verification, fact-checking or grounding, and of hallucination. Each family counts once.
Citation stays a small slice as filings grow
We counted citation families by the year they first published.

Citation families grew from 2 to 37 a year, in step with the overall field, so their share barely moved. By first filing year, 27 were first filed in 2023 and 48 in 2024.
What the citation patents describe
A family can describe more than one way of pointing to sources.

| Verification, fact-checking or grounding | 20 | 22.7 |

Across all 2,269 AI search families, 227 (10.0%) mention verification or grounding and 53 (2.3%) mention hallucination. Checking answers against sources is a wider theme than citing them.

Most other owners hold one family each. 86 of the 88 families include a US publication, partly because US filings come with English claims that our matching can read.
What this means
Citation patents are a small share of filings, so do not assume every AI answer will link back to the pages it used. When answers do link, it helps to be a page that states a fact clearly and is easy to verify. Writing facts that plainly is a large share of what AI search optimization services deliver.
Write pages that a system could quote: a clear claim, a number, a date and a named source. Keep service pages specific to one topic. To see whether AI assistants cite your site today, start with a free AI visibility audit, and judge any AI SEO services by whether those citations grow.
Limits
A patent shows what was filed, not what is live in any product.
Patents usually publish about 18 months after the first filing, so families first filed in 2025 and 2026 are heavily undercounted, and 2026 publication counts cover January 1 to September 17, 2026 only.
Citation language is easiest to find in claims, and English claims are mostly available for US, European and WO filings. Chinese and other filings matched on title and abstract may be undercounted.
Keyword rules can match citation language used for other purposes, such as citing prior documents in a database.
Assignees that are individual people are not named.

Frequently asked questions
How many AI search patents describe citing sources?
88 of 2,269 generative AI search patent families published since 2018, or 3.9%. In 2026 so far it is 35 of 794 (4.4%).
Who files the most of them?
Microsoft holds 14 of the 88. Toronto-Dominion Bank holds 5, Amazon 4, and Google and Snowflake 3 each.
Do these patents mean AI assistants always cite sources?
No. A patent shows what was filed, not what is live in any product. The low share suggests citation is one approach among many.
How can a business become a source AI answers cite?
Publish clear, specific facts on crawlable pages and keep them current. Our data shows 20 of the 88 citing families also describe verifying answers, which suggests facts that are easy to check matter.
