AthenaHQ review: what Athena HQ does, pricing, and alternatives
AthenaHQ (Athena HQ) is a Y Combinator-backed AEO and GEO platform that tracks how your brand appears in AI answers and suggests on-page and off-page actions to improve it. It has a free Essential tier covering ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot, and a Starter plan at $295 a month that adds more engines and a content optimization agent. Its closest alternatives are Profound, Peec AI, Scrunch and Otterly.AI. Like those tools it is software for your team to use, not a service that implements changes for you.

What AthenaHQ does
AthenaHQ calls itself the command center for AEO and GEO. Its homepage lists:
- Visibility tracking across AI engines, with share of voice, mention frequency, sentiment and competitor insights.
- Citation source analysis: which sites AI answers rely on.
- Content recommendations that flag citation gaps and suggest on-page and off-page actions.
- A content optimization agent on paid plans, which Athena describes as self-learning.
- Ask Athena: an AI assistant that answers plain-language questions about your own visibility data.
- Executive dashboards with BI connections on Enterprise.
- Integrations with GA4, Google Search Console, Shopify, Webflow and Framer.
Enterprise plans add a knowledge base with claim review, discrepancy detection, the Athena Citation Engine, persona targeting, multi-region support, SSO and audit logs. The homepage shows a Y Combinator badge.
AthenaHQ pricing
AthenaHQ prices by credits. Its pricing page defines one credit as one AI response, so a prompt checked on five engines uses five credits.
| Plan | Price | Credits | AI engines | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Free | 300 | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot | Unlimited users, prompt and response analysis, sources and competitor insights, content recommendations |
| Starter | $295/month | 3,600 per month | 11: adds Google AI Mode, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral | Unlimited topics, prompts and competitors, country-level tracking, Shopify and Webflow integrations, CSV export, content optimization agent |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Starter engines and more | Knowledge base, citation engine, SSO, audit logs, multi-region, white-glove setup |
The page says annual billing is 17% off but does not show the annual price. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons on Starter.
Working out what Starter covers: 3,600 credits a month on 11 engines is roughly 327 prompt checks per engine per month. Run daily, that is around 10 prompts. Run weekly on four engines, it is around 200 prompts. Decide on frequency and engines before you compare it with tools that price per prompt.
Strengths
- A real free tier. 300 credits across five engines with unlimited users is enough to test your own prompts, which most enterprise tools do not allow.
- Wide engine list on Starter. Eleven engines, including Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, is broader than most mid-priced tools.
- Action-oriented. Recommendations cover both on-page work and off-page work such as earning citations on the sites AI already trusts.
- Ecommerce integrations. Shopify and Webflow integrations help stores connect AI visibility to product pages.
- Unlimited users on the free and Starter plans.
Limitations
- Credits take some maths. "Unlimited prompts" on Starter is limited in practice by the 3,600 credits, and the more engines and the more often you check, the fewer prompts you can afford.
- Annual price is not shown. You have to work out the 17% discount or ask.
- Recommendations and drafts still need people. Athena's agent can suggest and improve content, but technical fixes such as robots.txt rules, schema, entity data and server-side rendering are for your developers.
- Enterprise features are custom priced. Knowledge base, SSO and multi-region need a sales conversation.
Who AthenaHQ is for
AthenaHQ suits growth and content teams, including ecommerce brands on Shopify or Webflow, that want monitoring plus content suggestions in one tool and have someone to act on them. The free tier also makes it a good first stop for anyone who wants to see AI visibility data before paying.
It is less suited to businesses that want the technical and content fixes made for them, or that need simple per-prompt pricing.

How to get the most from the free tier
AthenaHQ's free Essential plan is one of the few ways to see real AI visibility data without paying. With only 300 credits, plan your test before you start:
- Pick 20 to 30 prompts. Focus on questions a buyer would ask before choosing a product like yours, plus a few branded ones such as "is [brand] any good".
- Decide on engines. At one credit per AI response, 30 prompts on all five free engines uses 150 credits per run. That gives you two full runs, which is enough to compare one week with the next.
- Add your real competitors. The competitor view is where most of the insight is: who AI recommends instead of you, and which sources it cites for them.
- Read the recommendations critically. Note which ones are on-page (changes to your site) and which are off-page (earning mentions elsewhere), and who on your team would do each.
If the free run shows clear gaps and you have people to act on them, Starter is the natural next step. If it shows gaps and you do not have the people, a service is likely the better use of the same budget.
AthenaHQ vs a done-for-you service
AthenaHQ Starter at $295 a month and our plan at $299 a month look similar on price. They are different products.
AthenaHQ gives your team a platform with lots of engines and a content agent. Our AI search optimization services give you the implementation. We start with a free AI visibility audit covering AI crawler access, schema, llms.txt, Organization and sameAs entity data, server-rendered content, and whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention you. Month one fixes what it finds. After that we keep optimizing and monitor up to 50 prompts a month. 3-month minimum, or $2,990 a year.
If your team wants to run the work in-house, AthenaHQ is a strong option, and its free tier costs nothing to try. If you want an AEO agency to do it, a platform will not replace that. For background on the strategy behind both, read our answer engine optimization guide.
